While traditional stationary bikes worked only the lower body, newer versions have arm and shoulder workout add-ons. Stationary bikes come in a wide range from a basic model to hyped-up versions with electronic heart rate monitors, magnetic resistance and cushioned back rests. What you opt for depends on your individual budget and individual preferences. Undoubtedly, working out on a stationary cycle is a perfect calorie burning exercise.

Stationary cycles and calorie expenditure

To ensure a good workout, make yourself comfortable on the stationary bike. Adjust the saddle and the height of the seat to ensure your knee is slightly bent when the pedal is at the bottom. The handlebars should be adjusted so you are in a forward leaning position. If the bike has a heart rate monitor, it will guide you to your intensity levels. Your heart rate should be in the comfort zone where you are slightly winded. Make certain you push down the pedals for intensive calorie burning. For higher intensity you may either increase the resistance, pedal faster or stand up and pedal. Keep in mind that the higher you’re intensity levels, or the greater your pedal rotations, the more calories you burn. This varies from individual to individual and depends on physical weight, metabolism rate and variables like intensity of the workout.
