Adults can prevent injuries while playing sports by following some simple tips. These tips are designed to prevent the more common sports injuries to both men and women.
Tip #1 - Avoid being a “weekend warrior”, by exercising each day and by not overdoing it on the weekends by trying to make up for all the activities you wish you could do during the week. Use lunch periods to hit the gym, or jog around the building. Make use of fitness programs offered by employers or the local YMCA before or after work.
Tip #2 - Educate yourself about your sport so that you can avoid injuries out of ignorance. Use proper form so that you can avoid repetitive injuries.
Tip #3 - Remember to wear safety gear including helmet, shoulder and knee or wrist pads, athletic support and mouth guard.
Tip #4 - Know and accept your body’s limits physically, mentally and emotionally. As we age we cannot perform at the same level as we did when we were younger, so modify your activity based on your fitness ability.
Tip #5 - Stay in shape and keep your body fit all the time, not just when you are playing your sport. Increase your level of exercise gradually and you will improve your strength and endurance level.
Tip #6 - While exercising strive for a total body workout of cardiovascular, and flexibility as well as strength training. Take advantage of cross training to reduce injuries and have a total body fitness going on.
Tip #7 - Women participating in sports should pay attention to muscle development and maintain proper weight. Avoid excessive exercising as it may affect the menstrual cycle.
Tip #8 - Be knowledgeable about sports treatment so that you can be aware of your options when discussing treatment of sports injuries with your doctor.
Tip #9 - Always properly warm-up and cool down to give your muscles the ability to be flexible and to relax any tight muscles both before and after the playing or training.
Tip #10 - Stay well hydrated by drinking water before, during and after exercising, training or playing sports to keep your muscles in top performance.
Tip #11 - Stay on your level of ability when joining leagues so that you are not being pressured to push harder or go beyond your physical capabilities. Especially as we age, our bodies cannot perform as when we were younger, our flexibility and ability to move quickly diminishes with age. Participating in sports can be healthy for us as long as we do not do anything in excess. Listen to what your body is telling you and perform at a level that is comfortable for your body and you will avoid injuries.
