Therapeutic radiography is used for treatment of patients who have some non-malignant disorders and cancer. It uses the biological effects of the ionizing radiations and the high energy x-rays. A course of therapeutic radiography may be given individually or in combination with other treatments like chemotherapy and surgery, depending on the conditions.

The therapeutic radiographers use radioactive sources and x-radiations in planning and delivering the prescribed treatment. The planning steps are considered to be very important in therapeutic radiography that generally occurs in two stages. First stage is localization that occurs during the first visit. You may be advised to perform MRI scan or CT for identifying the size and the location of the tumor.

The second stage is the dosimetry planning that occurs in the absence of the patient. He discusses the layout of the radiotherapy treatment beams and the daily dosage of radiation to be given. A therapeutic radiographer needs to have a wide range of skills including interpersonal as well as technical.

Therapeutic radiography is frequently used for the treatment of cancer for controlling the malignant cells in oncology departments. A number of patients who were treated with the therapeutic radiotherapy were found to be cured against cancer. It uses giving a prescribed dose of ionizing radiation to a particular targeted tissue, at the same time taking care that no damage is caused to the adjoining healthy area. Therapeutic radiography is found to be a curative treatment for those suffering from cancer.

Total body irradiation (TBI) is a therapeutic radiography technique that is used for preparing the body in receiving a transplant of the bone marrow. Therapeutic radiography also has some other applications in non-malignant situations. This includes treatment of thyroid eye disease, trigeminal neuralgia, prevention of heterotopic ossification and keloid scar growth and pterygium.

Therapeutic radiography is mostly used for treating malignant tumors and it can also be used as a primary therapy. Therapeutic radiography is also used in combination with hormone therapy, chemotherapy or surgery. This therapy is a painless therapy and it causes very minimum or no side effects at all.
