Professional athletes usually understand the vast importance of an annual physical exam with a physician. People who engage in sports and other physical activities as a pastime or hobby, on the other hand, may have a harder time understanding why it is so important to visit the doctor on an annual basis in order to stay as fit as possible and to additionally stave off potential sports injuries. These folks may feel as though their amateur player status does not merit the same preventative considerations as professional athletes. While it is certainly true that professional athletes do need a great deal of attention from doctors and other medical professionals in order to make sure their bodies are working to their full potential, people who play sports on a regular basis also need to make sure that they visit the doctor annually to make sure that everything within their bodies is working well.
Most physicians actually suggest that all patients receive a full physical exam on a regular basis, but the need becomes greater when patients are constantly engaged in physical activities and therefore are more prone to injuries. The reasoning for this is simple: You may have a small twinge in your leg that doesn’t really bother you all that much, but when you bring it up at your physical exam the doctor realizes that you’re suffering with an injury that was the result of sports activities. If you didn’t bring up the injury then it would inevitably get much worse after a lot of time of ignoring the twinge, and might eventually turn into something that could take you out of the game entirely. Little pains and twinges often aren’t dramatic enough to prompt a person to call and make an appointment with their doctor, but these little pains and twinges can be indicative of an injury that has the potential to become quite serious.
People who annually visit their doctors also have the advantage of getting customized advice from their doctors about the best ways to stay healthy. A healthy person is more poised to avoid sports injuries than someone who is not healthy, because a healthy person’s body can take injuries much better than someone who is not so fit. If an injury occurs, it’s the healthy person who will probably be able to bounce back much more quickly than someone who has not taken very good care of his or her body. This is not to say that the key to good health and preventing sports injuries is nothing more than visiting a doctor once a year, but having an annual exam is just one component of a well rounded approach to health. Think of your doctor as an important teammate who can help you stay as healthy as possible, but when it comes right down to it the responsibility of staying healthy and avoiding sports injuries rests squarely on your shoulders. Your doctor is there to help you along in your quest for good health and optimum athletic performance.
