Taking Care Of Your Headache

Most of us treat our headaches at home without seeing a doctor. Self-care at home should be about more than treating a headache it should also be about preventing future headaches.

There is a lot more that you can do for that interfering headache than take an over-the-counter pain medication or prescription medication. If you make a real effort to live a healthy life you will not only feel better all over but you will lessen your chances of having tension headaches.

The basics of preventing headaches through healthier living begin with eating nutritious foods and eating on a regular basis (no skipping meals). It is especially important not to skip breakfast. Your body has already fasted over night and it needs fuel first thing in the morning.

Another thing you can do for your body is to exercise on a regular basis. Physical activity releases certain chemicals that block pain signals to your brain. Ask your doctor before starting a new exercise program, but basically swimming, walking, and cycling are good choices for staying physically active. Avoid exercising too vigorously because that can trigger certain types of headaches.

It is really important to get enough sleep. In order to make sure you do get enough sleep strive to wake up and go to bed at the same time each day, even on weekends. Getting healthy in a bid to avoid future headaches is also about avoiding stress. You can take control over the stress in your life by simplifying your life, managing your time wisely, adjusting your attitude to a more positive one, and letting go of the things that worry you and controlling those things that you have control over and releasing all other worries and letting peace evade your space instead.

Learn how to ease your muscle tension by recognizing when your muscles are tense. Apply heat or ice to soothe sore neck and shoulder muscles. Put your heating pad on low, or use a hot-water bottle, warm compress or warm towel. Take a hot bath or shower to relieve tension in your muscles. Or, if it works better for you use an ice pack in a cloth over tense muscles.

Use relaxation exercises like deep breathing, yoga or other relaxation techniques in order to stay calm.
