Skiing is the activity of gliding over the snow with the help of skis. Skis were originally made of wooden planks but in the recent times fiberglass or related composites are more popular choice to manufacture skis for practicing skiing. Primarily this had evolved as a mode of transportation for goods in the hilly region. But later on it has taken shape of an outdoor sport. It is also being practiced as a recreational activity and being viewed as a mode of entertainment. The process of skiing being a very fast activity involves vigorous body movements and this aspect of the game ensures generation of enough body heat to burn the excess of the calories in the body. The extra calories in the body is a major health concern as they can lead to some of the serious health hazards like heart attack, high blood pressure and diabetes.

The process of skiing

The skis used for skiing have got metal edges. The metal edges on the skis are strapped to the feet of the person practicing the sport with the help of the ski bindings. There are two sticks for each hand of the person. The sticks are used for giving the ski a motion. For this purpose the sticks has to be hit against the ground. The sticks are also used for giving the ski proper direction. The ski strapped in the feet gives support to the whole body and act as a vehicle. Through this process a person can glide through the snow and can cover a large area under the snow which otherwise would have been impossible through normal walking down the snow.

Skiing as a sport to burn calories

Skiing as a sport involves vigorous physical movements. It is even practiced for a prolonged period of time. This nature of the sport ensures that the whole body is being subjected to rigorous workout; this in turn generates heat in the body. The heat thus generated is very much instrumental in burning the excess amount of calories in the body.

Skiing can be very useful in reducing the calories in the body. Apart from being an exercise it can also be practiced for recreational purpose and since practiced on a beautiful landscape can be a good getaway from the mundane world.
