Radiography is a process of making a radiograph that produces an image by radiation on a surface that is radiosensitive other than using the visible light. The images are produced by the passage of highly controlled amounts of radiation in the body and then the resulting shadows and the reflections are captured on the film. We all are aware with the x-rays that is a technique of producing still pictures of the organs of your body on a photographic film. Fluoroscopy uses these x-rays for capturing the moving images of an organ of your body at the time of its functioning. It is used to see the motion of the internal organs of your body. Radiography and fluoroscopy are both used for diagnostic purposes.
Radiography and fluoroscopy differ a bit from each other, as radiography will only produce still images. But, fluoroscopy is the study of your mobile body structures. An x-ray beam is passed continually in the body part that has to be examined and it is then transferred to a monitor similar to that of a T.V. This allows viewing the details of the body part that has to be examined in their motion.
Uses of fluoroscopy:
* Fluoroscopy is basically used in such types of examinations and procedures where the therapist needs to observe the motion of your internal body parts. For e.g. fluoroscopy of the upper gastro intestinal series lets the physician visualize the movements of the intestines. Radiography of the upper gastro intestinal tract is an x-ray examination of the stomach, esophagus and the small intestine.
* In cardiac treatment, fluoroscopy allows the therapist observe the rate of blood flow in the coronary arteries.
For performing an x-ray, you need to wear a loose fitting gown and have to either stand or lie on the x-ray table as suggested by the therapist. For the fluoroscopy examination, you are asked to drink barium- a contrast medium liquid that displays on the x-ray and enables the therapist observe the movement of the liquid. Some examinations will inject you with a contrast medium for showing its movement in your veins. The images are displayed on the screen within no time, and thus the therapist can diagnose you accurately and very quickly. Radiography and fluoroscopy are very important for conducting any type of complex medical investigation.
