Individuals that have arthritis should avoid eating tomatoes because the tomato contains solanine, which is actually a poison from the nightshade family. This substance can upset the calcium balance in your body. The tomato is a very acidic vegetable, which can weaken the gastrointestinal tract. If you have acid reflux, give yourself a break and avoid products that contain tomato.
