Radiography is not limited only upto X-rays. The field pf radiography is very vast and has many applications as well as specializations. One of its sub-specifications is Interventional radiology.

Interventional radiology is a special branch of radiology in which minimally invasive procedures are performed. Image guidance is used for that. This has varieties of applications. Some of these procedures are done for purely diagnostic purposes like angiogram. Others are done for treatment purposes like angioplasty. Pictures or images are used to direct these procedures, that are usually done with needles or other tiny instruments like small tubes called catheters. The images provide road maps for the body. These road maps allow the Interventional Radiologist to guide these instruments through the body to the areas of interest.

Interventional radiography is mainly used for catheterization. They are well-suited for guided and minimally invasive operations

The imaging methods of interventional radiography includes, computed tomography, X-ray fluoroscopy, ultrasound (US), and magnetic resonance imaging. In Fluoroscopy and computed tomography ionizing radiation are used. They can be harmful to the paint and interventional radiologist. On the opposite side these two methods are very fast and geometrically accurate. An ultrasound method is also fast and inexpensive.

The medical applications are great in number. Interventional radiography is used in angiography for imaging the blood vessels to look for abnormalities with the use of various contrast media.

It is also used in chemoembolization. In this process it delivers cancer treatment directly to a tumor through its blood supply. What happens next is that it uses clot-inducing substances to block the artery, ensuring that the delivered chemotherapy is not “washed out” by continued blood flow

Interventional radiography is used for drain insertions. Tubes are placed into different parts of the body to drain fluids. In embolization, IR is used. Here blocking abnormal blood vessels or organs are treated.

Interventional radiography is a form of radiography. It is very particular in its use. It is generally used in medical processes related to blood clots. It is also used in thrombolysis related to the blood clotting. A doctor recommends this test only if it is absolutely needed.
