Pain relief is on the mind of many patients visiting the offices of doctors of osteopathy (D.O.s). There is little doubt that patients have become disenchanted with the use of dangerous substances and pain killers and the way that such medicines are affecting their day to day lives. Heavily curtailing the ability to operate vehicles or interact coherently with others, sufferers from pain are often quite isolated in their suffering not by virtue of the pain itself, but much more often by the sedative medications they must use to experience even just brief periods of relief.

When visiting a D.O., the patient learns how to submit to musculoskeletal manipulation instead of relying on medication and even though the road to recover is not overnight and requires quite a few stops on the way, before long the patient is able to let go of pain killers altogether. Once a pain free life is achieved, the patient can now concentrate on the next portion of the journey: incorporating osteopathy in everyday life. Many a patient is surprised to learn the variety of ways this may be done.

* Patients discuss with the doctor of osteopathy the choice of mattress and also the choice of work chair. A far cry from simply discussing this kind of furniture in the terms of ergonomically correct placement and apportionment, a D.O. who is personally familiar with the past sufferings of the patient will have a solid recommendation with respect to angles, materials, and even brand names.

* The patient wishing to remain pain free can learn a lot of useful stretching exercises that prevent any recurrence of painful spinal compression and decreased movement of the vertebrae.

* Pacing the day is another skill that the D.O. will advocate with the special needs of the patient in mind. The patient will learn to recognize and respect the signals of the body that it is time for a break, and then the individual must learn how to provide the body the kind of break it needs to become refreshed for the next tasks at hand. It would be simplistic to assume that a break is little more than sitting down and reading a book, when instead the body needs a break from this very kind of activity and thus requires stretching, walking, and even bending exercises!

* Something as mundane as adjusting the car seat also falls under the umbrella of services an osteopathic specialist provides to the patient. Some drivers have never really paid a lot of attention to the variety of buttons attached to the driver’s seat, all of which make it softer, harder, and even bulge in part. Instead, thus far their focus has been on higher, lower, forward and backward, dismissing a way of making their drive more relaxing to the back and much friendlier on their overall health.

Incorporating osteopathy in everyday life is a process that is highly encouraged by D.O.s and patients who follow these suggestions are enthusiastic about the results even small adjustments can have on everyday life and the absence of pain!
