Herpes is a viral disease which can be sexually transmitted from one person to another when there exist a physical contact. The two virus associated with the disease are HSV-1 and HSV-2. Scientist have been carrying out research for developing a vaccine against this deadly disease caused by HSV-1 and HSV-2 or herpes simplex virus. The disease caused by this virus is genital herpes and oral herpes. The vaccines developed so far have been tried on mice as it is believed the genetically structure is quiet similar to human beings. It was found that when the mice was vaccinated with herpes simplex virus which was genetically modified, showed no symptoms of the disease even after thirty days of exposing to dangerous strain of the virus HSV-1 and HSV-2.

And when the experiment was repeated on mice with a conventional vaccine, mice died within 7 days. The study has given a hope of assurance that the vaccine can be developed. Although the experiment was carried out for the HSV-1 virus but the disease caused by HSV-2 virus genital herpes will also be curable. It has been found that both the viruses come out to be ninety nine percent similar.

Herpes vaccine which can provide lifelong cure has not been developed till date. If we study the statistics we find that fifty five million of Americans positive for the HSV-2 virus. And around 7% of them have outbreaks 1-4 times annually. But soon due to advancement of technology the herpes vaccine will be on the way.

When the virus attacks the cell, the HSV sends a warning signal to its neighbouring cell. This leads to enter the cell into anti-viral state. The virus tricks the cell by producing a protein, ICPO by destroying the immunity of the cell. Once this is gone, the virus proceeds in its function and spreads itself to the other cells of the system as the defence system of the cells is lowered.

The concept being used for the vaccine says that, it will remove the genetic instruction for ICPO and the virus will be useless or of no function. Subunit vaccines are also been studied, which comprises of 1 piece of a virus which is a protein subunit. These protein subunit have proved to be better than the attenuated virus as the later can cause disease and the subunit concept cannot cause disease.. However it has not been found very successful for treating dangerous disease like AIDS and genital herpes. Our immune system is not so strong that it can fight against the virus.
