The pregnancy with the best possible outcome for mom and baby is the one that took place in the beginning with careful planning right from the start. Here are some tips for a successful conception:

The first thing you should do after making the decision to conceive is to make an appointment with your gynecologist. This appointment is typically called the preconception examination. The goal for this appointment is to be sure that your body is in top physical condition to support the pregnancy and that you are in good health. Your doctor or midwife is not just responsible for your health but for the health of your unborn child. This appointment is the first step in keeping that commitment.

Next you will want to make an appointment with your dentist. This dental health check is to ascertain if your mouth, teeth and gums are in good health prior to conceiving. Statistics tell us that periodontal disease during pregnancy can lead to preterm delivery that can result in low birth-weight babies.

Your successful conception is also dependent on other factors such as the female being at an ideal pre-pregnancy weight. If women are too thin or weight too much it may pose health risks to the mom-to-be or baby. Obesity makes it more difficult to conceive.

Others things you can do to have a healthy conception include making sure that your diet is a healthy one, start taking prenatal vitamins that include folic acid, and vitamin B. Start reducing or avoiding alcohol, caffeine, and any tobacco products. Educate yourself about potential chemicals and lead at your work or home and learn how to take proper safety precautions. Do all you can to avoid the risk of contracting any potential infections (stay away from sick people, wash hands regularly properly). Avoid raw fish and unpasteurized milk products.

Make sure that if you haven’t already done so that you engage in regular physical activity every day. Exercise improves fitness and keeps your body fit for the rigors of pregnancy and birth. Exercise also reduces stress.
