Feline herpes is a disease that affects the nasal passages, sinuses, mouth and upper airway tracts of kittens and cat. Feline herpes virus is found to be transmitted through the discharge of nose and eye of cat that is infected. This virus remains active for less than 24 hours in environment. This herpes occurs mainly due to contact with the bedding, dishes, and toys or through contact of cat to cat.

Feline herpes virus can be controlled by administration of vaccine through nose. The disease may not be prevented totally by vaccination as disease may develop mildly and cat may carry the virus.

Feline herpes virus can be controlled or properly diagnosed by reviewing the history as well as symptoms which includes the history of vaccination and its contact with cat.

The period of incubation is from 2 to 17 days and person can be ill for few weeks ranging from 2 to 4. The virus leads to nasal discharge, sneezing, corneal ulcers drooling, depression, and conjunctivitis and may even result in abortion.

Control of feline herpes virus includes nasal passages and eye clearing accompanied by ointment application to oral ulcers and eye drops for lesions ion eyes. The main carrier of disease is cat hence their immune system has to be made strong by giving them antibiotics and vitamins to control the bacterial infections if any exist in them. Water and food intake should be sufficient so that cat’s health is maintained.

The feline herpes virus stays for long in cat and hence to control the feline herpes virus it is essential that the cat should undergo vaccination annually.

Two types of feline vaccinations are usually given

1) Core vaccination is first one given to all cats and the vaccination protects the cat from FCV (Feline calicivirus), FHV (Feline herpes virus), rabies, FPV (Feline panleukopenia virus).

The vaccination controls the FHV also called as feline rhinotracheitis. It affects the respiratory system like nasal discharge, sneezing, rhinitis and conjunctivitis. It may also cause problems and complication in pregnancy.

FCV can cause pneumonia, upper respiratory symptoms, mouth sores. FPV is a severe virus affecting cats and kittens. The symptoms are vomiting, diarrhea, seizures and low WBC count.

2) None core that is given to cats when it is suspected that they are under threat of some disease. It is very effective in cats and kittens. The cats should be separated till they are retested after vaccination.
