In most of the cases dry eye is a result of certain medications. People taking medicines tend to have more severe dry eyes than those who are not taking medicines. Elder people associated with drug therapy are prone to dry eyes. Medications taken for high blood pressure, diabetes intestinal problems, menopause, allergies, eye and kidney problems may cause dry eye syndrome. The body’s ability in the production of tears is reduced by certain medicines. These include antidepressants, antihistamines, oral contraceptives, decongestants, diuretics, ulcer medications, etc. the treatment of dry eye either temporary or permanent depends on the cause. Different medications or treatments available are:
1. Artificial Tears- This is one of the primary treatment for dry eyes which provides temporary relaxation. But with long-term usage, it affects the natural production of the tears.
2. Restatis- Restatis is the first therapy for people with dry eyes, whose production of tears is concealed because of ocular inflammation. This is the only medicine approved by the FDA for persistent dry eyes.
3. Systane Lubricant Eye Drops- It gives instant and long-lasting relaxation to those suffering from dry eyes. It is found useful to get relief from the symptoms of morning dryness, sensation of foreign body, etc.
4. Tears Naturale Lubricant Eye Drops- It lubricates and soothes your chronic dry eyes just like the natural tears. It consists of polyquad preservative which is very delicate on the eyes.
5. Punctal Occlusion- It is a non-surgical process wherein the tear ducts are closed permanently by inserting a small silicone plug into the opening of the eye. It helps you to preserve your natural tears. It acts like a stopper. When the plugs are closed, the tears remain on the eye for a longer time.
6. Cyclosporine- When used as an ointment, it restores the production of tears by suppressing the immune damage.
7. Tacrolimus- It has come in to use recently to suppress the immune system. It is an anti- inflammatory product that is free of cortisone. It stimulates the tear production and soothes the eye.
8. Antibiotic Products- They are generally used before starting the treatment for conjunctivitis sicca. There are not enough tears to wash the infectious agents and so the chances of secondary infections are increased. These products actually do not increase the production of tears but are very important during the early therapies.
