Headache is one of the common symptoms of eye-related problems. Headache may crop up due to allergies, changes in the hormones, sinus conditions, stress and hypertension.
There are different types of Headaches. They are:
I. Migraine headaches- Migraine headaches are usually hereditary and generally roots up at the age of 15 and 30. Women are more prone to such headaches and they are assumed to be associated with stress and some foods. The dilation and constriction of the arteries cause migraines in your head. These headaches are very painful and occur generally on one side of the head. These aches are associated with vomiting and nausea. Certain foods like chocolates, dairy, alcohol are related with causing migraines.
II. Eye-related headaches- These headaches are a result of prolonged reading, watching T.V., working on computers or any such work that requires deep concentration. A small period of rest is enough to get rid of such headaches. Many times, the eye glasses cause strain on your eye, which in turn leads to headache. The eye’s tendency of drifting or crossing outwards also causes an ache related to eye.
III. Tension headache- As the name suggests, it caused due to the tension on the body either due to stress or overwork. It is accompanied by eyestrain and a dull ache in the head. The ache usually occurs on both sides of the head or at the backside.
Signs and Symptoms of Headaches:
1. Sound and light sensitivity and burning eyes.
2. Vomiting and nausea including fatigue.
3. “Visual aura” that includes jagged lights, flashes of lights, missing visual areas.
4. Severe headache usually around the brow area.
Detection and Diagnosis: You need to undergo a complete physical examination by your doctor to root out the main cause of your headache. You also need to be verified by your ophthalmologist to see if your headache is not due to any of the eye-related problems.
Treatment: It is essential to control your blood pressure and get relief from stress. Your doctor may prescribe new glasses or medicines to control your hormonal levels. If headaches are persistent, then you need to consult your doctor to undergo a medical evaluation.
