Dry Eye is a very common, complicated process after the LASIK surgery. Patients after undergoing this surgery experience dry eye very commonly. Cutting of the corneal nerves after LASIK is the cause of the dry eye symptoms. This leads to decreased stimulation of the senses, resulting in the decreased production of tears. As the corneal nerve starts healing, the symptoms of the dry eye gradually reduce and then disappear after a few weeks.
Possible Symptoms of Dry Eye for LASIK Patients
1. A burning sensation in the eyes.
2. A sandy and a gritty feeling in the eyes.
3. Sensation of foreign body like you feel that there is something is there in your eye
4. A feeling of “heaviness” to the eyes.
5. Light sensitivity
A reason for LASIK Dry Eye Symptoms- One of the reason for dry eye after LASIK is corneal flap created during the procedure severs the corneal nerves. The tear glands are provided feedback by these nerves. Hence there is reduction in the rate of tear flow to the eyes. As the eyes start healing after the surgery, the nerve endings in the cornea start regenerating and the tear capacity returns to its ordinary levels.
The dry eye symptoms may worsen if you already have dry eyes before performing the LASER Surgery and it may continue for several months. The condition may get very worse with these patients. Therefore, people with pre-history of dry eyes may not be good for the LASER Surgery.
The cornea is a very sensitive part of the body. A group of sensory nerves provides sensitivity to the eye. The flap created during LASIK causes some of the nerves to be cut down, thus reducing its sensitivity. Due to diminished sensitivity, tear glands do not receive instructions by the eyes when supplementary moisture is needed. That is why; patients are advised to use artificial tears very often for at least first few months after the surgery.
Females experience symptoms of dry eye more as compared to males before and after the LASIK eye surgery. Also individuals wearing glasses experience the symptoms of dry eye more than those using contact lenses.
