Most of the time it is obvious that you have sustained a sports injury. Other times a sports injury can creep up on you. There are two types of sports injuries acute and chronic. Here are some common sports injury warning signs that you should pay close attention to:

If you experience any kind of joint pain such as in the knee, ankle, elbow or wrist area you should see a doctor if the pain last more than 48 hours even after R.I.C.E. treatment (rest, ice, compress and elevate).

Tenderness at any bone, muscle or joint experienced while pressing down can be a sign of injury. One way to be sure is if the same spot on your other side of the body does not hurt when you press down and this side does, it is abnormal and most likely an injury.

Swelling is a sign of injury and usually occurs along with pain and redness of the skin area around the injury. If swelling occurs around a joint there may also be soreness and stiffness as well as a clicking noise as the tendons snap over one another after having been pushed into new positions from the swelling.

A reduced range of motion of a joint often accompanies swelling of a joint. You can be certain of an injury by comparing one side of the body with the other. If you cannot bear weight on the joint than it is another indication that you have an injury.

Another warning sign of injury is a numbness or tingling sensation. This often occurs with nerve compression and is a sign of serious injury. This warning sign should always be heeded and a doctor seen immediately.

Warning signs of injury should always be heeded. You should never play when you are having any of these above warning signs of injury. Playing or training while injured can cause additional injury, which could take a mild injury and make it worse. Worsening the injury may prolong the healing time and thus make your downtime greater.

Your body gives you these warning signs of an injury for a reason. The warning signs are to grab your attention so that an injury can be recognized and receive prompt treatment.

When you ignore warning signs of injury you can put yourself and others in danger because playing when you are not at optimal condition can prevent you from performing as you should on the field and since most sports require some kind of teamwork, if playing while injured you will not be able to perform as other team members expect you to, possibly putting them and yourself at risk.
