Radiography used in dentistry is known as dental radiography. In this type of radiography, diseases and injuries regarding teeth are diagnosed with the help of images or radiographs. Result of these images decides further treatment. Therefore, to produce proper dental radiograph dentists need sound knowledge of anatomical characteristics of oral cavity and relationship between individual teeth. Besides this knowledge, they must know about the various types of dental films, use of dark room equipments and appropriate exposure and processing techniques.
Specific techniques and exposure time give satisfactory and clear radiographs. Exposure of source on the specific area of mouth cavity depends on the emulsion, target film distance, tissues density that to be radiograph, and the characteristic of exposing rays. To get these radiographs, X-ray sources are used. There are different X-ray units available for dental radiography and are specially designed to control voltage, exposure time and amperage. If all the instructions followed satisfactorily, dentists can obtain the desired result.
Along with the precise exposure techniques, method of processing X-ray films is also important for good results. Dental radiograph in dental radiography can be obtained through automatic or annual process.
One of the processing methods in dental radiography is Automatic processor. Most of dental treatment facilities use this processing method. In automatic processors, exposed films are immediately loaded to the processors by unwrapping films in the dark room. These processors are equipped with rollers and certain compartments filled with chemical solutions through which the film advanced. At the end of the cycles and processes, the film release.
Another processing method in dental radiography is the manual process. This is done by using standard time temperature method and a small container consisting of various processing solutions. For developing the film it, have to pass through different stages like developing, rising, fixing, washing and drying in temperature controlled environment. These steps will give better dental radiographic image.
Main part in the dental radiography is films used for the radiographs. Films used in the dental radiography are available in various sizes, degree of sensitivity and designed for specific purpose. For better result, these films need to be store in cool and dry places away from any chemical contamination. Films emulsion may decline if exposed to high temperature, chemicals or moisture.
