Males that have testicular cancer can learn how to cope with the cancer and the changes that they will be experiencing as they go through treatment by learning coping skills. Coping skills can come in the form of a plan that can be devised by your doctor and other medical support staff.

There are some feelings that are perfectly normal to experience as you are told about your diagnosis of testicular cancer. Feelings such as anxiety, fear, nervousness, and sadness are all normal. Each male deals with these emotions differently. Coping skills can help males to express their feelings and to feel empowered to deal with what is happening to him.

The first thing that can make a man feel empowered is knowledge. Knowledge about testicular cancer will bring about information that can be utilized in his efforts to deal with the initial reactions that he will be faced with not only his own reactions but also those from his family, friends and co-workers. Knowledge will give him confidence to make decisions about his treatment.

Another coping skill is his ability to take care of his body and to make healthy choices about his everyday life that will make a difference in how his body can heal. One way to care for his body is in how he eats. Having a healthy diet will provide the nutrients his body needs to heal. Getting enough rest is another way to care for his body. Proper rest not only helps the healing process but it helps to de-stress too. Exercise, and making wise lifestyle choices like quitting smoking, reducing or quitting alcoholic consumption can all lead to a healthier lifestyle that will benefit your body’s ability to heal.

Networking with others who have testicular cancer can strengthen coping. Knowing that you are not alone will give you strength and may even be an avenue for discovering new coping skills.

Lastly, but certainly not least in order of importance is the fact that those with cancer need to be surrounded by those who care about them. Staying connected to family and friends assures the male with testicular cancer that he is surrounded by those who will uplift him, support him, be there for him when he needs someone to help with daily tasks should during the times when complications from treatment such as fatigue, nausea, pain, or others have him feeling less than capable of coping. It is at these times when family and friends and others can encourage him and remind him of the coping skills he has learned and remind him to apply them in order to come out on the positive side of things. It is important to never turn down any offers of assistance because sometimes helping others is “therapy” for family and friends as they too are learning how to cope with a family member or friend with cancer.
