You’re especially likely to encounter sports injuries if you participate in sports that are full-contact, or if you play sports that require a great deal of stamina. This does not mean that other sports are devoid of injuries for participants; you can encounter an injury simply walking down the street. In other words, sports injuries happen in a wide variety of situations.

How do you know when to consult a doctor? There are a few definite signs that should send you to a doctor right away. Any time you can’t stop bleeding, or if a bone is protruding from your skin, you should head to the emergency room right away. If you are having trouble breathing, or if a blow to the head makes you feel confused and disoriented, then you need to see a doctor. Any instance which might result in the loss of a limb or life merits an immediate trip to the hospital.

The majority of sports injuries are nowhere near as dramatic as spurting blood and concussions. In fact, many sports injuries are subtle enough to where you don’t really notice them until a day or so after the injury occurs. You should head to the doctor when a sports injury is unlike one you have ever experienced, and does not seem to be healing on its own. In other words, if you have sprained your ankle before and know how to treat it effectively, then you may be able to avoid a trip to the doctor. If your own methods do not make the injury any better, however, it’s time to make an appointment to see a doctor and have your sports injury evaluated and treated.

Any time you have a concern that a sports injury is more critical than it appears, you should talk to your doctor. Some serious injuries may appear relatively harmless, but are actually quite dire and need treatment. An injured leg, for example, might actually be a hairline fracture which will only get worse if walked on continually without a cast or brace. You may be able to avoid your injury becoming a major problem by simply heading to the doctor when the injury first occurs. It is best to err on the side of caution when it comes to your body. You should never feel foolish or feeble for making an appointment to have a sports injury evaluated because you may not be able to tell if it is indeed something serious that needs attention. If you listen to your body and consult a doctor when necessary, you have a much better chance of staying in the game and staying healthy. Don’t avoid doctors when you have a sports injury because that can be a sure-fire way to allow a minor injury to evolve into something that will have a huge effect on your body for the rest of your life.

Related posts:

The Right Time To Consult Your Doctor About Pms If you are like a majority of women, you have...

Sports Injury Arsenal You probably already have a first aid kit in your...

Protective Sporting Gear One of the most mindboggling aspects of some sports is...

Diet As Preventative Measure When people think of taking steps to avoid and prevent...

The Importance Of An Annual Physical To Avoid Injuries Professional athletes usually understand the vast importance of an annual...

Start Slow To Avoid Sports Injuries

Sports Injuries

An athlete, by nature, is probably not the kind of person to ease into a physical activity slowly and methodically. A good portion of athletes are so gung-ho to get into the game that sometimes they set themselves up for sports injuries because they aren’t paying attention to their bodies and to the stress that the physical activity may be taking on them. Even more at risk are those people who have not been physically active for some time. They are so eager to get fit, or perhaps remember all too well the great physical shape their bodies were once in, that they wind up jumping right into a sport or activity with reckless abandon and wind up with a painful sports injury.

The problem isn’t merely the pain of the injury, but the psychological effect this has on a person who is either engaging in a sport activity for the first time, or instead rejoining the athletic ranks after years of inactivity. Minor sports injuries will heal, but sometimes this is all that it takes to discourage people enough to where they give up on sports and physical activity for good. It’s a natural reaction to be disappointed when a sports injuries sidelines you, but you can’t allow the injury to force you to give up any hopes you have of being as fit as possible. Folks should view minor sports injuries as a time to pause on physical activities, and not as a reason to completely give up.

Before ever reaching that point, however, it’s a good idea to make a hearty attempt at avoiding sports injuries before they ever occur. One of the best ways to avoid sports injuries when you are fairly new at strenuous physical activity is to start slowly. Until you fully understand the dynamics of your body and the full spectrum of your capabilities it’s important to use caution. Many people get so wrapped up in their desire to get fit or do as well as they can for their teams that they participate at an athlete’s pace. The difference, however, is that seasoned athletes have the physical ability to perform this way, but other people may not. An athlete who is used to sprinting from one base to another in a game of softball may only get a little winded in the heat of the game, but people who haven’t done much other than sitting on the couch watching television for the last few years are really putting themselves at risk for a major sports injury. At the very least, the couch potatoes are going to be quite sore for a few days after the game. At the worst, they could injure themselves enough to merit a trip to the hospital.

The potential threat of sports injuries should not be something to keep you out of the game, but it should stay in your mind that you need to start slow in order to avoid sports injuries.

Related posts:

Increase Flexibility To Avoid Sports Injuries Plenty of sports injuries are a result of flexibility issues....

New Activities Welcome New Injuries Most athletes, whether seasoned or not, know that trying new...

Work Out Every Day To Avoid Injuries It is much easier to avoid sports injuries when you...

Don’t Ignore Injuries Athletes who are at the top of their game know...

Injuries Happen In All Sports Sports injuries happen in all sports. You don’t have to be a wrestler, a football player, or a triathlon athlete to experience injuries. Unfortunately, many sports participants don’t recognize the very real possibility of injuries, and therefore they do not take care to avoid injuries like they should. It’s important to remember that most physical activities carry with them some degree of risk, and for this reason people must listen to their bodies and not push themselves too hard. Going beyond the physical abilities and limitations of your body is a surefire way to invite injuries, and it doesn’t take a hard core sport to do this. No matter what sport you are playing, you still need to be wary of injuries.

Sports injuries occur in contact sports quite often, but sports and other physical activities which don’t even involve contact with other players also have the real potential for injuries. Tennis, for example, is not necessarily considered a hard core sport and certainly doesn’t fall into the realm of contact sports, but tennis players encounter many different types of injuries. Muscle strains, sprains, and the infamous “tennis elbow” can happen to even the most seasoned tennis players. Gymnasts certainly know that athletes need not be involved in a contact sport for injuries to occur; consider the myriad of injuries and complications that gymnasts are well known for encountering on a regular basis.

When you consider that sports injuries can occur in a variety of circumstances it’s easy to see how injuries can happen to just about any sports participant, regardless of the activity they are involved in. Bowlers may not spend time out on a field tackling other players, but they are still very much susceptible to injuries related to their sport. Even a sport as seemingly tame as curling, which is a game that is sometimes mocked by other athletes because of its perceived lack of physical demand on the athletes involved, has the potential to strike participants with painful injuries. The fact of the matter is that every sport that involves any type of physical activity opens the participants up to injuries. It doesn’t matter if the sport is a full-contact, notoriously aggressive sport or if the sport is something that never involves contact and is played in a relatively passive and civil manner. As long as physical exertion exists, so does the potential for injuries.

The trick is to not allow yourself to become complacent just because you are playing a sport which is not known for inciting injuries. No matter what sport you engage in you should always be on guard against sports injuries, and should always listen to what your body is trying to tell you. If you feel as though you are pulling your body in a direction you shouldn’t be pulling, or if one of your muscles starts to spasm while you’re involved in a sport which you have always considered to be low impact, you should still stop before an injury occurs.

Related posts:

General Information About Sports Injuries It is important for all parents to be aware of...

Preventing Sports Injuries The best way for any athlete to deal with sports...

Kids And Sports Injuries Ever wonder which sports kids are more likely to be...

Start Slow To Avoid Sports Injuries An athlete, by nature, is probably not the kind of...

Teamwork Minimizes Injuries Not all sports are played with a teammate. Perhaps it’s a dull ache in a muscle to tell the athlete to slow down, or maybe it’s a brief but potent shooting pain that warns the athlete to pay attention because something isn’t quite right. Whatever the initial tip-off, far too many athletes and sports participants ignore these important signals from their bodies. Some people ignore the feeling because they feel as though they can push through the pain and move on with the game, while other people are so wrapped up in the competition that they really don’t listen to their bodies and notice the warnings. If you are in tune with your body, however, you will probably notice the desperate signals you’re receiving to stop what you’re doing because an injury is about to occur.

Not all sports injuries can be accurately predicted. A soccer player who is accidently kicked in the head by another player probably won’t receive any advance warning from their bodies, just as a ballerina dropped by her partner can’t hope to predict the impending injury and avoid it. Impact injuries within sports often occur without any sort of warning whatsoever. Injuries as a result of overuse or contorting a body part contrary to what it’s used to, however, are usually preceded by some form of a warning from your body. Athletes who have already experienced a wide variety of injuries are probably most well versed at recognizing the hints of an upcoming injury because they have already been through it. Even if you have never had any type of sports injury, though, you should still be able to recognize the signs of something amiss within your body and take the appropriate steps to avoid a full blown injury.

Signs to look for when engaging in a sport or any physical activity include the feeling as though your muscles are getting stretched a little too much, or any sharp pains which may or may not subside. Your instincts might light up and send you the message that you’re working your body too hard or putting your body into a bad position. It’s incredibly important to trust your instincts and to alter or stop the physical activity immediately after you get the feeling as though something isn’t quite right, because sometimes the only warning that a sports injury is about to occur is a feeling that just can’t be pinpointed. Don’t disregard these feelings when they happen. Even though you may not have a conscious knowledge of a muscle that’s about to get strained or a bone that is about to give way, your body knows exactly what is going on and tries desperately to send you the signals you need in order to realize that something is about to give. If you can learn to listen to your body and stop before something happens, you may be able to avoid certain types of sports injuries.

Related posts:

Sports Injury Arsenal You probably already have a first aid kit in your...

Teamwork Minimizes Injuries Not all sports are played with a teammate. Since many of the people who experience sports injuries are engaged in activities which they plan to start doing again as soon as the injury heals, it’s important to find an injury treatment program which allows people to recover back to the point to where they were before the injury occurred, or as close as they can get. Many people turn to alternative therapies as a way to avoid excessive pain medication, surgeries, and also as a preventive measure to keep the body in tiptop shape and avoid future sports injuries if possible.

Some treatment methods which are considered as alternative methods within mainstream society are actually commonplace among professional athletes. One great example of this is the use of massage as a treatment and preventative routine to stay healthy and keep muscles in their best working order. Sports teams usually have licensed massage therapists on staff – both deep tissue massage and other forms of massage – because they know that the athletes derive great benefit from the massages. Routine massages can help keep the body in full working order, and massage can also be used to treat certain muscle injuries. You don’t have to be a professional athlete to reap the physical benefits of a good massage. You can use routine massages as a means to keep your muscles supple and therefore avoid some sports injuries, or you can try massages targeted to repair damage from sports injuries you already have.

Many athletes put their bodies through a lot of stress, and some will argue that this stress throws their bodies out of alignment and can result in painful injuries. One small sports injury, if left untreated, can affect the entire body and create an entire system of problems within the body. This is why plenty of athletes turn to chiropractic care in an attempt to correct any misalignments caused by sports injuries and the general wear and tear of rigorous sports. If a sports injury has left you in pain, and your doctor does not seem able to pinpoint the cause or provide you with any real relief, you may want to consider visiting a chiropractor to see if he or she can help you. There are some chiropractors who are specially trained to assist the special needs of athletes with sports injuries.

There are plenty of other alternative therapies you can try in an attempt to correct any problems resulting from a sports injuries: herbal supplements, acupuncture, acupressure, and biofeedback are just a few of the alternative therapies which claim to be able to help you heal faster and gain a physical balance so you are less prone to injuries. Just be sure to check with your primary physician prior to starting up any alternative therapy program which involves herbal therapies. Even though herbal supplements are derived from natural sources, they can still clash with any medications you may already be taking.

Related posts:

Deep Tissue Massage For Sports Injuries Massage therapy as a means by which to treat sports...

Alternative Therapies To Complement Traditional Treatment In Fibromyalgia Alternative therapies are complementary medicine or alternative methods and techniques...

Start Slow To Avoid Sports Injuries An athlete, by nature, is probably not the kind of...

Increase Flexibility To Avoid Sports Injuries Plenty of sports injuries are a result of flexibility issues....

General Information About Sports Injuries It is important for all parents to be aware of...

Sports Medicine Doctors

Sports Injuries

Family practice doctors and other medical doctors are well versed in recognizing injuries and assisting patients in recovering as quickly as possible. Not all doctors, however, are incredibly well versed in recognizing various sports injuries and helping athletes recover rapidly. After all, athletes often put their bodies through the wringer, and they can sustain injuries on a regular basis that the average person will never encounter in their lifetime. For example, a patient complaining of severe stomach pains will probably be run through a different battery of tests than a football player who comes off the playing field clutching his stomach, simply because of the abuse a football player’s body endures during the course of a game. Athletes have special needs when it comes to medical care because of the exceptional ways that they use their bodies.

Sports medicine doctors are medical doctors who specialize in treating athletes. These doctors have the expertise of recognizing sports injuries and knowing what needs to be done in order for the athlete to recover fully and quickly. Sports medicine doctors aren’t only for professional athletes who make their living from playing sports. If you experience an injury as the result of a sporting event it’s a good idea to visit a sports medicine doctor if your family doctor cannot pinpoint the problem, or does not seem to take an aggressive enough stance in your treatment regime. This is not to say that your family doctor is inept when it comes to treating sports injuries, but instead is to point out the fact that sometimes it’s best to go to a specialist in order to derive maximum results. For example, if your car is in a collision and you need it fixed as quickly and efficiently as possible, you would probably take it to a mechanical shop that specializes in fixing damage as a result of collisions as opposed to dropping your car off at a general mechanic’s shop and hope for the best.

Sports medicine doctors can also assist athletes in achieving their maximum physical potential. Sports medicine doctors have vast knowledge in supplements that are designed to enhance athletic performance. They can also advise patients on training techniques which can strengthen the athletes and give them the groundwork for a body as free from sports injuries as possible. Professional athletes who make a living playing sports on a team probably have sports medicine doctors assigned to them by their team, but if you are not a professional athlete you may want to ask your regular doctor for a referral. If you belong to a fitness club there may be a sports medicine doctor on staff there or at least a physical therapist that can steer you in the right direction to find a good sports medicine doctor. Be sure to first check with your health insurance company to see if your policy covers a visit to a sports medicine doctor, because not all policies cover this type of doctor visit. This may be the very best way to get a quick recovery from a sports injury, however, so it may be worth your money.

Related posts:

Comparing And Contrasting Doctors Of Osteopathy And Doctors Of Medicine A medical professional who is fully licensed and credentialed may...

The Importance Of An Annual Physical To Avoid Injuries Professional athletes usually understand the vast importance of an annual...

Injuries Happen In All Sports Sports injuries happen in all sports. You don’t need to lift weights and run marathons every single day (and indeed, that would probably be a very bad idea to push your body to those limits each and every day), but you should definitely make an attempt to get some form of exercise every day, in one way or another. The key is to give your body periodic days of rest which include physical activity that isn’t too terribly strenuous. Balance is important when it comes to daily exercise.

Most exercise physiologists and other experts agree that daily exercise builds up people’s strength and stamina, and these attributes are key factors to avoiding injuries when playing sports or engaging in other physical activities. Working out every single day does not have to be a daunting task. Something as simple as a walk around a park can certainly count as physical exercise, especially when it is done at a brisk pace. Your best bet is to map out your plans for physical activity to make sure you’re getting a wide variety of activities and a varying degree of exertion throughout the week. After all, limiting physical exercise to walks in the park may be suitable for some people, but not for athletes and sports participants who constantly demand more of their bodies while also constantly being at risk for injuries. Luckily, sports activities count as physical exercise, but the degree of the benefit from the exercise depends largely on the activity. A equestrian may get a lot of strength building exercises when riding horses, but there is a huge deficit of cardiovascular exercise if he or she does not take the time to add new elements to a daily workout routine.

How much exercise do people need? The standard minimum recommendation is one hour a day, but for athletes and other sports participants this may not be sufficient. Think of yourself as always in training. You want to perform as well as you possibly can, but you can’t hope to perform at peak performance if you aren’t training your body like you should. When you put yourself into a game without proper training, you’re just asking for a sports injury to occur. To figure out how much exercise you actually need, pay attention to how your body reacts to varying degrees of exercise. You don’t want to work out too much and risk injury and exhaustion, but you also don’t want to work out too little and derive no benefit from your efforts. When you find a combination that seems to put you in great shape for your sporting activities, try to maintain that level. You can gradually increase your efforts, but be sure to take it slow so you don’t wind up getting hurt and winding up out of the game.

Related posts:

Start Slow To Avoid Sports Injuries An athlete, by nature, is probably not the kind of...

The Importance Of An Annual Physical To Avoid Injuries Professional athletes usually understand the vast importance of an annual...

Increase Flexibility To Avoid Sports Injuries Plenty of sports injuries are a result of flexibility issues....

Tips For Preventing Sports Injuries In Adult Athletes Adults can prevent injuries while playing sports by following some...

Injuries Happen In All Sports Sports injuries happen in all sports. It is often the starting point for treating injuries because it minimizes swelling and relieves pain. RICE stands for rest, ice, compress and elevate. After initial RICE technique is applied other health treatments may be initiated as part of the treatment plan.

Pain relief and inflammation can be controlled by the use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs called NSAIDs. Inflammation can slow the process of healing if it is left untreated. Over-the-counter (OTC) medications are often prescribed by doctors treating sports injuries. OTC medications that may be recommended are aspirin, ibuprofen, ketoprofen, or naproxen sodium (Aleve).

Immobilization is another common treatment for sports injuries. It can reduce movement in the damaged area to prevent further damage. Immobilization also reduces pain, swelling and muscle spasm. Devices used to immobilize include: slings, splints, casts, and leg immobilizers.

Surgery is often required to repair torn connective tissues or to realign bones as part of compound fracture treatment. Usually surgery is not required for most sports injuries.

Rehabilitation is usually required to regain strength and movement of the injured body part. Physical therapy is often used in rehabilitation. Range of motion, strengthening exercises and balance exercises will be gradually started and increased in duration and intensity until the body part is fully functional again.

Rest is an important part of sports injury treatment. All injuries require time to heal and rest is part of the healing process. There will be a well-guided balance between your rest and your rehabilitation therapy sessions.

Other therapies that are useful in healing from sports injuries are electro stimulation, cold/cry therapy, heat/thermo therapy, ultrasound, and also massage therapy.

Your doctor will design a sports injury treatment plan that takes into account the type of injuries, the severity of the injury and your preferences. You will need to make a commitment to following the plan if you want to get back into the game and heal well for all the activities of your life. Taking care of your body in your best investment in your future you can make. Knowing and following the rules of the game, playing fair, using proper safety equipment, and making sure that you are using safe and well-maintained equipment are things that you can do to ensure that you sports participation will be done with preventing sports injuries in mind.

Anyone can get injured while playing sports but those who are children, teens, middle-aged or women are at special risk. Children because they lack coordination, self-discipline and the fitness to be in the best shape to avoid injuries and teens because they can be over-zealous and push themselves to much to be better than the others. Teens can differ in size from peers making them at different performance levels, which can cause injury.

Those who are middle-aged and participating in sports are at risk because of the declining agility and resilience that occur as we age. Sometimes middle-aged athletes are weekend athletes and are inactive during the week while they work making them in poor physical shape to endure the rigors of sporting events.

Women are sustaining injuries as their sporting events have become faster and more aggressive than the female sports of the past.

Related posts:

General Information About Sports Injuries It is important for all parents to be aware of...

What Are Sports Injuries Injuries that are sustained as a result of participating in...

Physical Therapy For Sports Injuries Physical therapy for sports injuries is different from heading to...

Common Leg Injuries Sports Players Suffer From Leg pain and leg injuries are common among sports players...

Alternative Therapies For Sports Injuries There is a wide variety of treatment methods for the...

General Information About Sports Injuries

Sports Injuries

It is important for all parents to be aware of some general information about sports injuries before their son or daughter participates in contact sports. There is always the possibility that an injury can occur when playing contact sports and knowing not only about the possible sports injuries but how to prevent them should be a priority before participating for the first time.

Sports injuries can occur at all levels of sports play including school sports. No player wants to sustain an injury because it normally is a setback for any athlete. Treatment and rehab will usually soon put the player back in the game.

There are as many different types of sports injuries as there are body parts to be injured and more. There are acute injuries and chronic injuries, injuries that require immediate first aid, and those that require a trip to the emergency room. Sports injuries can be mild in which case some first aid usually get the player right back into the game and there are those injuries in which the player is required to have long-term rehab before returning to the game. Some common body part injuries include overuse injuries, rotator cuff tears, knee ligament injuries, sprains and strains and fractures.

There are injuries that are common to particular sports and there are injuries that happen in most sports. There are injuries that occur due to contact and injuries that occur due to the type of surface being played on. Sometimes injuries are related to the repetitiveness of the motions used in the sport.

Using safety gear such as helmets, pads, mouth guards, and proper footwear can prevent all sports injuries. Another way to help prevent injuries is to assure that the players are using equipment that is made for the particular sport being played and that the equipment is being maintained properly.

Part of sport injury prevention revolves around the proper training and warm-ups that the players receive. The proper ongoing training of the coach is also relevant to injury prevention.

All players should be in good physical condition before participating in the sport, which is why general, physical examinations are usually required. Any injured player should also be required to have a doctor’s approval before returning to play especially after moderate or severe injuries.

All players, coaches and referees should abide by the rules of the sport in order to keep the players safe. Rules of conduct such as illegal blocks and tackles are enforced especially for the health and safety of the players.

It is also important that all players be allowed to rest adequately in-between training and games. Rest is critical to proper training because rest can make an athlete stronger and can help to prevent injuries. Fatigue leads to poor judgment, which can lead to sports injuries.

Warm-ups are critical to prevent sports injuries.

Never play when you are in pain. Pain is a signal from your body that it is injured. Athletes should not play while injured as this can lead to more serious injuries, which can then be long-term.

Athletes should also be careful regarding playing while recuperating from chronic injuries. Proper recovery days can help to prevent re-injury.

Related posts:

Injuries Happen In All Sports Sports injuries happen in all sports. It does have some risk for sport injury though. The most common causes for bicycling injuries are due to poor bike fit or from improper riding technique. The bike must be adjusted to fit your body in order to avoid most bicycle injuries.

To avoid the most serious bicycling injury, wear a proper bike helmet.

Common bicycling injuries include knee pain, patellofemoral pain syndrome, head injury (concussion), Chondromalacia (deterioration of the underside of the kneecap), abrasions and road rash, hand numbness, muscle cramps, sprains and strains, delayed -onset muscle soreness, Achilles tendonitis, plantar fasciitis, arch pain, blisters, piriformis syndrome and also overtraining syndrome.

Osteoarthritis is a common source of knee pain in bicyclist as well as patellofemoral pain syndrome and chondromalacia.
