When treating hemophiliacs, or those affected by hemophilia, the doctor will take a look at several factors before deciding in an appropriate course of action. When talking about treatment for this blood disorder, it is important to remember that there is no cure for hemophilia. There are only treatments that can reduce the chances of excessive bleeding.

The most common form of treatment for all hemophiliacs is replacement therapy. This means that the patient suffering from the disorder will be given whichever clotting factor they are missing. Type A hemophiliacs will receive replacements of factor VIII while those with type B hemophilia will receive factor IX. Most of the time, these factors are given intravenously or through an injection. Many times, especially with those that have less severe cases, these factors are only given when necessary, such as before surgery or dental work or after an injury.

For those with severe cases: There are ways that those that have more severe cases of hemophilia are given factors that will help prevent problems with their blood clotting. This type of replacement factor is given as either a prophylactic or as a preventative. However, many times, these replacement factors are normally only given as needed. When these factors are given, it is important to note that these are made from human blood. In all cases, the blood has been screened and treated for diseases. Also, treatments that are given on demand or as needed are much less expensive than preventative treatments.

There are also clotting factor concentrates that are often given, especially to children, who have very thin blood and to those who are at risk of bleeding very easily. These concentrates are not made from human blood and can be given at home. In fact, these treatments are quite useful for many hemophiliacs who need a boost when it comes to his or her blood disorder.

Of course, when talking about treatments for hemophiliacs, it is also important to think about preventative measures as well. While you cannot control whether or not you, your child or a loved one suffers from this sometimes debilitating blood disorder, you can find ways to reduce the chances of bleeding. Many doctors will advise that parents of hemophiliac infants and toddlers have their child fitted with a helmet to prevent falls from turning into a disastrous head injury. It is also advisable that people that suffer from this condition reduce their risks of excessive bleeding by avoiding sports and other activities that can easily cause injury. In most cases, contact sports and other high risk sports are not recommended. Other activities are recommended for patients of hemophilia.

When looking at treatment options, it is important to follow the recommendations and guidelines of your physician. Your doctor will look at your case and decide on an individual basis as to what type of treatment is necessary.

Related posts:

The Lifelong Bleeding Disorder Known As Hemophilia We all need blood in our bodies to survive. It is a serious blood disorder. The red blood cell of the individual with this disorder, have a sickle shape to them and can move easily through the blood vessels of your body. The hemoglobin in these sickle cells is abnormal causing the shape and makes them stiff and sticky which makes them clump and therefore get stuck in the blood vessels. Other blood cells can contribute to the “clumping”.

These clumps inside the blood vessels restricts blood flow and can even block the flow of blood causing pain, serious infections, and organ damage.

Sickle cell anemia is an inherited blood disorder that is life long. Those who have the disorder are born with it and have it for life.

There is no widely available cure for sickle cell anemia. There are treatments and bone marrow transplants may offer a small number of individuals, a cure.

Individuals with sickle cell anemia have long-term pain and fatigue. Treatment can improve the symptoms and most individuals with this blood disorder can now live into their 40s, 50s, or even longer.

Individuals at greatest risk for sickle cell anemia are those from Africa, South or Central America, the Caribbean islands, and Mediterranean countries like Greece, Italy, and Turkey. Other countries where individuals are at risk for developing sickle cell anemia are India and Saudi Arabia. In the U.S., the biggest population affected by this disorder is African Americans. One in every 500 African American births is affected by sickle cell anemia.

If you are at risk for sickle cell anemia it is important to recognize the signs and symptoms of the disorder. These signs and symptoms can vary with some having mild symptoms and others having severe symptoms. The disorder is present at birth, but most infant do not show any signs of the disorder until they are at least 4 months of age. Anemia as seen in blood test results or pain is often the first telltale signs of the disorder. Other signs and symptoms are commonly seen as a complication of the disorder and include shortness of breath, dizziness, headaches, pale skin, cold hands and feet, and chest pain.

The most common sign of the disorder is a widespread and sudden pain throughout the body – called a “sickle cell crisis”. This sickle cell crisis can affect the abdomen, bones, joints, or lungs. The chronic pain can last for weeks and be emotionally and mentally draining.

There can be complications of the disorder including something called hand-foot syndrome. Swelling can occur on the back of the hands, feet and can also affect the fingers and toes. This is often the first sign of sickle cell anemia that is seen in infants. Those with sickle cell anemia can suffer splenic crisis which is when the spleen traps cells that should be released into the bloodstream causing the spleen to enlarge and can then lead to anemia. The spleen won’t work right if it becomes too clogged with cells.

Another complication of sickle cell anemia is infection. Sickle cell anemia can damage the spleen and other organs that fight off infections. If the spleen is damaged an infection such as pneumonia can be fatal within hours or days.

Related posts:

The Blood Disorder Sickle Cell Disease Sickle cell is an inherited blood disorder affecting the red...

Faqs About Sickle Cell Disease Sickle cell disease is a serious medical condition that can...

How Do Sickle Cells Differ From Normal Cells A serious blood disorder called, Sickle Cell Anemia is characterized...

Can You Tell Me About Hemolytic Anemia A rare form of anemia, a blood disorder is hemolytic...

Can You Tell Me About Anemia Anemia is a blood disorder in which the individual who...

Can You Tell Me About Hemolytic Anemia

Blood Disorder

A rare form of anemia, a blood disorder is hemolytic anemia. This form of anemia is when red blood cells are destroyed or removed from the bloodstream before they usually have served their full lifespan. They typically live for 120 days. When an individual has hemolytic anemia, the body is removing the red blood cells faster than it is manufacturing them, which depletes the supply of red blood cells. This breakdown of red blood cells has a name: hemolysis. When there is less than normal amount of red blood cells in the body, the condition causes the body to not be able to have enough oxygen-rich blood circulating. This oxygen-rich blood is necessary for the proper functioning of the body.

Tiredness is the most common symptom when a person is anemic. The tiredness is a result of the tissues of the body not having enough oxygen. The marrow in the center of large bones in the body is how the new red blood cells are manufactured. New red blood cells are needed to replace the ones that are removed from the body. Hemolytic anemia occurs when there is an increased destruction of red blood cells and the marrow does not make enough red blood cells to replace the ones being destroyed. In one type of hemolytic anemia, the body makes abnormal red blood cells. In the other type the body’s immune system attacks the red blood cells. The destruction of red blood cells can occur in the bloodstream or it can occur in the spleen.

An individual with hemolytic anemia can be successfully treated and the condition controlled. There can be different intensities including mild to severe. If the individual has mild hemolytic anemia it may not need to be treated at all, in fact the individual may not even know they have the blood disorder. If the person has the severe form of hemolytic anemia it can be life threatening if the person does not receive treatment.

Certain medications or infections can lead to hemolytic anemia and if this is the case, changing the medication or treating the infection can help make the hemolytic anemia resolve.

Individuals of all ages can develop hemolytic anemia. Males and females can get the disorder. Individuals of all races are known to develop hemolytic anemia. Sickle cell anemia is a common form of hemolytic anemia, and develops mainly among those of African or Mediterranean descent.

What are the signs and symptoms of hemolytic anemia?

Usually if you have mild hemolytic anemia you will have no signs or symptoms and will not even know you have the blood disorder. As the severity of the anemia increases so do the seriousness of the symptoms. The most common sign of hemolytic anemia like all anemias is tiredness.

Related posts:

Getting To Know About Hemolytic Anemia Are you curious about what hemolytic anemia is? Before you can begin treatment for your condition, it is important that you get the correct diagnosis. First of all, you will need to go to the doctor and have the correct diagnosis. Your health care provider will take a complete medical history and will perform a physical exam. Another way your doctor will determine whether or not you have anemia is that a variety of blood work will be ordered.

Once you have a diagnosis, your doctor will also want to pinpoint why you are suffering from anemia. This is because there are many medical conditions that cause anemia and your doctor will want to make sure they have a reason for the diagnosis. It is then that your doctor can help you find a medical treatment.

A look at causes of anemia and treatment options:

One of the most common causes of anemia is because of blood loss from injury or other problems. When the body looses a large amount of blood, it is hard for it to recuperate. At this point, your doctor will choose to give you a blood transfusion to replace that blood as well as giving you fluid replacement. Another treatment option is oxygen and iron supplements. If you suffer from chronic blood loss, then your doctor will work to find a solution to this problem as well.

Anemia is also commonly cause by problems with red blood cell production. This can cause issues with iron deficiency. Many women suffer from this problem and with minor cases, it can be treated with a diet rich in iron and protein as well as iron supplements. Ferrous iron supplements will gently release the iron into your blood stream as needed. If you are given iron supplements your need to make sure you tell your doctor if you are taking other medications, which can interact negatively when you take iron supplements. Iron supplements can cause problems such as vomiting and irritability. It is usually suggested that you take iron supplements exactly as prescribed and with a meal to help reduce the stomach aches caused by these supplements. If you suffer from this form of anemia, you will need to also add good sources of protein to your diet. These include eggs, red meats, whole grain products and nuts.

If your doctor finds that your anemia is caused by bone marrow or stem cell problems, then this will require a more stringent course of action. Moderate to severe forms may need repeated blood transfusions and even bone marrow transplants. Your doctor will look at your case and find out which treatment will work the best for you. Interestingly enough, if you find yourself with this form of anemia, you might also go into remission and the problem will resolve on its own.

Lead poisoning and other chronic diseases can also cause anemia. Lead poisoning will require prescription medications. With chronic diseases, your doctor can treat the disease and then help you with your anemia.

Related posts:

Anemia Anemia is a very common blood disorder that affects mainly...

Causes Symptoms And Treatment For Anemia Anemia is perhaps the most recognizable of the blood disorders....

Can You Tell Me About Anemia Anemia is a blood disorder in which the individual who...

Anemia Facts There are many facts about anemia that may be of...

What Is Aplastic Anemia And How Do You Cope With The Disorder When the bone marrow produces too few blood cells, whether...

Bone Marrow Failure And Shwachman

Blood Disorder

Do you know someone who has Shwachman-Diamond Syndrome? Shwachman-Diamond Syndrome (SDS) occurs when someone has a bone marrow failure in which the white blood cell (WBC) count is low so the body is not able to fight off infection and the red blood cell (RBC) count is low and they may also be larger than normal size of cells which will lead to the condition known as anemia. These individuals can also have a low platelet count. Platelets help the blood to clot over areas of the blood vessels where there is damage and bleeding has occurred.

Shwachman-Diamond Syndrome is typically diagnosed within the first year of life and what usually tips the doctor off that there may be something wrong is short stature and on x-rays problems with the bones known as metaphyseal dysostosis is seen. Both male and female babies can be diagnosed with this syndrome and they are usually diagnosed within the first 12 months of life. Babies with Shwachman-Diamond Syndrome have malabsorption, which is poor food absorption.

A condition known as aplastic anemia is diagnosed when all three blood cell types as described above happens as a result of bone marrow failure. There are other bone marrow failure syndromes and blood conditions and some are rare. Shwachman-Diamon syndrome is specific in that there is also a reduction in the digestive enzyme production by the pancreas, a low serum trypsinogen and isoamylase (which are digestive enzymes), low pancreatic enzymes after being stimulated by the pancreas and also the pancreas is small or fatty as seen on CT scan imaging or by ultrasound images. The bone marrow failure is discovered through low neutrophils in at least 3 separate blood testing and also low hemoglobin or platelet counts during blood testing.

Shwachman-Diamond Syndrome is an autosomal recessive inherited disease in which a person has two abnormal or mutant copies of the SDS gene. Laboratory tests cannot identify this genetic mutation in some individuals with the syndrome. The mutant gene is called SBDS or Shwachman Bodian Diamond Syndrome.

As with most blood disorders that involve the bone marrow there is the possibility of developing cancer and with Shwachman-Diamond Syndrome the cancer that is leukemia. Leukemia is a blood and bone marrow cancer.

Doctors use different tests to help them diagnose Shwachman-Diamond Syndrome including a low serum trypsinogen and isoamylase test and a test that will determin the amout of fat in the stool as well as a CT scan and ultrasound that will distinguish the pancreas to see if it is small or has fatty deposits. Blood tests can determine if the while blood cell or red blood cell counts are low and what the platelet count is to see if that is normal or not. Genetic testing may be done to help isolate the SDS gene to see if it is mutated. A mutated gene that has the SBDS mutated gene stands for the Shwachman Bodian Diamond Syndrome.

Related posts:

Pearson Syndrome A Inherited Bone Marrow Failure Individuals diagnosed with Pearson Syndrome are not able to absorb...

Myelodysplastic Syndrome A Blood Disorder Myelodysplastic syndrome occurs mostly in those who are over age...

The Big Deal About Primary Thrombocythemia There is a blood disorder that can make an individual...

Blood Tests And Treatments Used To Treat Or Diagnose Blood Disorders In the fight against blood diseases or blood disorders doctors...

Lots Of Blood Disorders And Diseases If you look up blood disorders and diseases in the...

How Do Sickle Cells Differ From Normal Cells

Blood Disorder

A serious blood disorder called, Sickle Cell Anemia is characterized by "Sickle-shaped" red blood cells...they look like the letter C. These abnormal red blood cells are stiff and sticky and this is why they tend to form in clumps and get stuck in blood vessels as they stick together forming a blockage which doesn’t allow them or healthy cells to pass. When this blockage of blood flow occurs the limbs or organs being blocked do not receive the blood flow they are suppose to get and will therefore lack for oxygen which can be critical creating an unhealthy situation.

The shape of the cell is just one way that the abnormal sickle-cell differs from a normal red blood cell. The normal red blood cell is disc-shaped and looks like a doughnut that still has a hole. Normal red blood cells contain an iron-rich protein called protein hemoglobin. The purpose of the red blood cell is to carry oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body.

Sickle cells are not only shaped different because instead of shaped like discs they are shaped like the letter C, they contain abnormal hemoglobin too.

Normal red blood cells flow easily through the blood vessels and abnormal sickle cells get stuck disrupting the normal flow of blood through the blood vessels.

Approximately 2 million Americans have the trait for sickle cell with the condition actually occurring in 1 out of every 12 African Americans. If your family ancestry came from South or Central America, especially Panama, Africa, Caribbean islands, and any of the Mediterranean countries like Greece, Italy and turkey, Saudi Arabia or India you may be at risk for Sickle cell anemia.

It is important to have early diagnosis so that prompt and proper treatment can be started. To meet this requirement for safety, the United States has a mandate for newborn screening for Sickle Cell Anemia. The hospital where the newborn is delivered at will make sure that the baby is scheduled for this screening and the results of the test will be sent to the pediatrician noted on the child’s medical record. If this initial test shows some sickle hemoglobin, then a second blood test is done to confirm the diagnosis of Sickle Cell Anemia. Usually both tests are done before the baby is one month of age. A hematologist may take over the care of your baby after the first blood test results so that the 2nd test results can be monitored and proper treatment started if the 2nd test is also positive for Sickle Cell Anemia.

There is nothing that can be done to prevent Sickle Cell Anemia because it is an inherited disease. You can take steps to reduce complications from the disease by getting early diagnosis and treatment. Couple at risk for Sickle Cell Anemia can have genetic testing and genetic counseling before they marry or try to conceive.

Related posts:

The Blood Disorder Sickle Cell Disease Sickle cell is an inherited blood disorder affecting the red...

Do You Know About Sickle Cell Anemia Sickle cell anemia is perhaps the most well known of...

Faqs About Sickle Cell Disease Sickle cell disease is a serious medical condition that can...

What Are Blood Disorders When people refer to the term blood disorders, they generally...

Anemia Facts There are many facts about anemia that may be of...

Anemia Facts

Blood Disorder

There are many facts about anemia that may be of interest to you if you or someone you know has one of the many types of anemia. Anemia is a blood disorder. When a person has anemia they have a lower than normal number of red blood cells. They may also not have enough hemoglobin in the blood cells. Hemoglobin is an iron-rich protein. The body utilizes red blood cells to carry oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body and also to carry waste products away from the body.

There are many types of anemia including iron-deficiency anemia that are very common and often affect children as well as women of all ages. Women who are menstruating are especially prone to anemia. Another type of anemia is Sickle cell anemia; also well known it affects those of African descent, Middle Eastern descent or those of Mediterranean or Indian descent. Then there is the Aplastic anemia, which is an anemia in which the bone marrow stops the production of blood cells. Children and adults can contract aplastic anemia. Chronic diseases can product the condition of anemia and those diseases most often connected with anemia are HIV, cancer, kidney and liver diseases, rheumatologic disorders, and tuberculosis.

Perhaps the cause that most people are familiar with for anemia is blood loss. Poor diet that lacks proper nutrients that would help replace monthly blood loss in menstruating females can also be a contributing factor for anemia.

Illnesses like colon cancer, colitis, diverticulitis, and ulcerative colitis can lead to the condition of anemia.

Individuals taking certain medications may experience anemia. Medications that may lead to anemia include acetylsalicylic acid (ASA), and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications and medications prescribed for GI bleeding. Other conditions that may lead to bleeding and anemia are gastric ulcers, the condition known as hemophilia, hemorrhoids, and also hookworms.

A poor diet in which there is a lack of vitamin B12 or folic acid can lead to anemia. Individuals most likely to be lacking in vitamin B12 or folic acid are teenagers, pregnant women, and infants.

It does not take much blood loss to cause anemia. Individuals can lose approximately 1 mL of blood when they have stool or hemorrhoid problems.

When there is a rapid destruction of blood cells such as in inherited diseases such as Sickle cell anemia or thalassemiaare or when the individual has cancer or severe kidney or liver disease.

How do you know if you are suffering from anemia?

The symptoms of anemia include fatigue, pale skin, a weakness, feeling dizzy especially when you go from a sitting or lying position and go to stand up. Shortness of breath can also be a symptom of anemia especially if you have cancer.

Related posts:

Can You Tell Me About Hemolytic Anemia A rare form of anemia, a blood disorder is hemolytic...

Can You Tell Me About Anemia Anemia is a blood disorder in which the individual who...

Do You Know About Sickle Cell Anemia Sickle cell anemia is perhaps the most well known of...

Causes Symptoms And Treatment For Anemia Anemia is perhaps the most recognizable of the blood disorders....

Anemia Anemia is a very common blood disorder that affects mainly...

The Big Deal About Primary Thrombocythemia

Blood Disorder

There is a blood disorder that can make an individual feel a tingling in the fingers, hands or feet as well as perhaps to feel a coldness in them too. They may feel dizzy, weak or fatigued. Primary thrombocythemia is a disorder in which the bone marrow produces too many platelets, which can lead to abnormal blood clotting and bleeding. Currently there is no known cause for the blood disorder but there are blood tests that can detect when a person has primary thrombocythemia.

Thrombocythemia is usually diagnosed by blood test but doctors will usually do a bone marrow biopsy to verify the diagnosis.

Individuals with thrombocythemia are given treatments that are designed to suppress the production of platelets and that usually will help relieve the symptoms.

The symptoms are related to blockage of small and larger blood vessels that can cause blood clots. It is usually the older patients that experience the blood clots that cause blockage in the larger vessels that can lead to stroke or heart attack. They will feel sensations in their hands and feet that are abnormal feelings and is usually what prompts them to seek medical attention.

The individual may also notice frequent nosebleeds or the doctor may feel an enlarged spleen or liver upon palpation during a physical examination. The patient may here a doctor or hematologist say that his/her platelets are “clumping”.

There are actually two different thrombocythemia’s – primary and secondary. Your doctor will explain which one you have. One major difference between the two is that primary thrombocythemia has an unknown cause and secondary thrombocythemia has a known cause. Your doctor will look for other medical conditions that you have that may contribute to the increased platelet count. One condition that your doctor will want to rule out when diagnosing you is myelocytic leukemia. This disease is a blood disease and it can also make your platelet count increase to abnormally high counts.

Doctors and hematologists will treat thrombocythemia by giving the patient medications such as hydroxyurea and anagrelide to decrease the platelet count. This will thin out the blood and decrease the likelihood of blood clots. Once the platelet count is once again within the normal range for platelets the doctor will adjust the medication so that the platelet count will stabilize and remain as much as possible within the normal range this requires frequent blood tests to check this count.

Other treatments may be used in combination with the drug therapy and may include plateletpheresis, which is a procedure that removes platelets, and then the blood is returned to the person receiving the treatment. This procedure is normally reserved for emergency situations.

So, what is the big deal with thrombocythemia? As you may have guessed, if the blood disorder is not caught in time blood clots can form and if they do so in large vessels leading to the lungs, brain or heart the patient can be in grave danger.

Related posts:

Explaining Myeloproliferative Blood Disorders You know doctors use big words and leave patients scratching...

Lots Of Blood Disorders And Diseases If you look up blood disorders and diseases in the...

Understanding The Blood Disorder Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura It is sometimes difficult to understand disorders of the blood...

Can You Tell Me About Aplastic Anemia There is a rare and very serious blood disorder called,...

Bone Marrow Failure And Shwachman Do you know someone who has Shwachman-Diamond Syndrome? Stem cells are located in bone marrow and develop into three different necessary blood cells used by the body. They develop into red blood cells that are used by the body to carry oxygen, white blood cells that fight off infections and foreign substances and platelets that are used to help form blood clots that are used to stem the flow of blood when a blood vessel is injured or damaged. An unborn baby may also have stem cells in his/her blood an in the blood of the umbilical cord. An embryonic stem cell is another type of stem cell that can develop into any type of cell and is not found in bone marrow. Stem cell transplants are used to treat individuals who have cancers such as leukemia; those who have severe blood diseases such as aplastic anemia, sickle cell anemia or thalassemia. Sometimes a disease develops in which a person is missing white blood cells such as certain immune-deficiency diseases and a transplant provides the stem cells needed to replace these white blood cells.

Blood tests can determine if certain diseases or conditions are present in the human body so they are useful in making a diagnosis or to monitor the condition of the blood in individuals with active blood disorders. Blood tests can also monitor how well organs are doing, can diagnose diseases such as anemia, diabetes, heart disease, cancer and HIV/Aids. Blood tests can also test for risk factors for certain diseases and can check to see if medications the individual is taking are working or not. Blood tests may also be used during regular routine appointments in order for the doctor to see how well your body is functioning. A thin needle can draw blood tests into a vein in your arm or a finger prick can be used to draw a very small drop of blood. Either way blood is drawn to be examined by laboratory workers.

A blood transfusion is a procedure that is quite common to do in which blood is replaced that has been loss during surgery or from a trauma in which excessive amounts of blood has been lost. A blood transfusion replaces the lost blood with compatible blood from a donor. The blood donor process is a closely regulated process to ensure the safety of all who participate. Blood banks collect, test, and store the blood used in blood transfusions. If you are going to have scheduled surgery, you may be asked if you desire to use your won blood during surgery instead of a donor’s. In that case you will be asked to donate blood several times prior to your scheduled surgery date.

Bone marrow tests are done to check to see if your bone marrow is healthy, diseased or damaged. The bone marrow test will show if your bone marrow is making normal amounts of red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets.

Related posts:

Explaining Myeloproliferative Blood Disorders You know doctors use big words and leave patients scratching...

The Blood Disorder Fanconi Anemia Have you heard of the rare, inherited blood disorder, Fanconi...

What Are Blood Disorders When people refer to the term blood disorders, they generally...

The Connection Between White Blood Cells And Blood Disorders To understand the connection between white blood cells (WBCs) and...

Myelodysplastic Syndrome A Blood Disorder Myelodysplastic syndrome occurs mostly in those who are over age...

Leukemia A Blood Disorder

Blood Disorder

Leukemia is a blood cancer in which there is an abnormal production or multiplication of blood cells, to be more specific white blood cells also called leukocytes. It belongs to a large group of blood disorders called “hematological neoplasms”.

The symptoms that individuals may notice are night sweats, flu-like symptoms, fever and chills, a general weakness or feeling of fatigue, swollen or bleeding gums, headaches, an enlarged liver and spleen, bone pain, joint pain and frequent infections. They may also experience dizziness, nausea or vomiting, swollen tonsils, paleness of skin, unexplained weight loss and diarrhea.

Individuals with leukemia typically have high number of white blood cells, or extra white blood cells that are immature in shape or are dysfunctional.
