While that is the case for many people, it is certainly not the rule. People of all ages can get acid reflux. It may not be chronic, but children and even infants can get it, too. It is never easy when your child or infant has acid reflux. It is very hard to tell in many cases. Your child may not be able to tell you exactly what is wrong, especially with young toddlers and babies.

Acid reflux is an uncomfortable condition. Your child may confuse the symptoms and discomfort with a stomach ache or an upset stomach. Your child may tell you that he or she has a sore throat or feels like he or she is going to throw up. Children are famous for having sick tummies so you may not even worry. However, if you find that your child complains day after day, at night or even after certain foods then you may need to take a closer look at what is really going on.

The symptoms of acid reflux in children are very similar to what adults feel. For example, the main symptom of acid reflux is stomach pain that may radiate into the chest and neck or throat. This is caused by the stomach acids flowing up from the stomach and into the esophagus. The acids will cause burning and pain. In fact, children who have this symptom may cry and whine. Babies with acid reflux may not want to take a bottle anymore.

What else causes acid reflux in children? Some babies may be born with immature sphincter muscles in the esophagus. The good news about this is that it is not always permanent. Most of the time, babies born with this condition will outgrow it by the time he or she is 12 to 18 months in age. In the meantime, you will need to learn to recognize the symptoms and learn how to treat it. With infants, they cannot tell you when they feel bad. One thing you can do is to give your baby smaller feedings and change positions when you fed. Your baby may need to sit up instead of lying flat. Frequent burping and over the counter medications such Mylicon might also be a great option.

For older children that have acid reflux, you will treat it much as you would with adults. First of all, take a look at the types of foods that your child eats. You might also want to make sure your child does not eat late at night. You can treat your child with lots of different medications that will quell the symptoms. Of course, if you are hesitant about medicating your child, you should talk to your pediatrician and get advice about this condition.

Babies and children can get acid reflux, so if you find your child is having problems, this is something you should take a look at.

Related posts:

Can Young Children Suffer From Acid Reflux While acid reflux is typically something that adults suffer from...

Infant Acid Reflux Symptoms As a parent of a new infant, there is not...

Children And Acid Reflux While you often hear of adults suffering from acid reflux,...

Your Baby And Acid Reflux Most people associate acid reflux with adults and heartburn or...

All About Acid Reflux Acid reflux strikes at any age. When you think it about it, it makes sense. In a normal person, food passes through the esophagus and the muscle will then close so the food can travel down in to the stomach. People with acid reflux have problems with this muscle closing properly, resulting in pain and discomfort known as acid reflux.

When children have acid reflux, they can feel quite miserable. Parents may not understand what is wrong, especially with young children who are not old enough to verbalize their needs. Luckily, with changes in the diet and medications, acid reflux in children can ease. In fact, many children with this condition will grow out of it as they age.

So, if you are a parent and your child is complaining about discomfort after a meal, how do you know what is wrong with your child? Is it the common stomachache or is it something a little more serious, like acid reflux? One way to know for certain is to look at the symptoms. The symptoms of children with acid reflux are quite telling. Many of them will complain of abdominal pain above the belly button, along with one or more of the following: chest pain, sour taste in the mouth after eating, burning feeling in the throat, weight loss or not wanting to eat particular foods and being very picky about the types of foods eaten. Other symptoms that are common among young children with acid reflux include gagging and choking when eating, recurrent bad breath despite brushing and flossing, sinus infections, wheezing and coughing, especially at night, hard stomach and recurring ear infections.

To the untrained eye, it does seem that these symptoms are rather random, but to your doctor, these symptoms will make sense. Your health care provider will be able to diagnose acid reflux in your child quite easily. After a physical exam, your pediatrician may order a series of other tests that could include an upper endoscopy, pH monitoring and lab tests such as a blood work up and a urine test. It is important that your doctor exams your child carefully to make sure the condition is not something that is more serious.

After a diagnosis of acid reflux is made, there are several treatment options for your child. First of all, you will be asked to watch your child’s diet. There may be certain foods that trigger the acid reflux, such as spicy foods. After that, your doctor may recommend over the counter antacids, such as Tums or Mylanta. The good news is that these medications are very safe for children. Acid suppressors such as Axid or Zantac may also be added to your child’s orders. Last of all, if these things do not work well, then you doctor may look at prescription acid blockers.

Work with your child’s doctor to ensure that you child is getting the care he or she needs for this condition. It is also important to understand that your child will need to understand the condition to help prevent problems.

Related posts:

Can Young Children Suffer From Acid Reflux While acid reflux is typically something that adults suffer from...

Heartburn And Acid Reflux You probably think that only adults that eat spicy foods...

Faqs About Acid Reflux Everyone has stomach acid. It is particularly upsetting when babies develop acid reflux because it is difficult for them to describe symptoms to those who care for them, all they can do is cry and spit up and hope that someone understands that they are in pain and can do something about it.

Acid reflux is a condition in which food and stomach acid flow back up or in medical terms, “reflux” into the esophagus. Sometimes gas escapes this way and we call that belching or burping…babies are good at that especially if you pat them on the back and all of a sudden the baby spits up formula or breast milk and if you are lucky the mess misses your shirt, shoulder, back or front of you. Reflux is actually common in infants and is usually referred to as “spitting up”. If the baby is three months of age or older and is still spitting up but is a “happy spitter”, than the baby probably does not require any medical attention or medications. However, if the baby is irritated, fussy, not sleeping or eating well than the baby may have acid reflux and needs to have medical attention.

Those babies with the “happy spitting” are more than likely going to outgrow the spitting-up by the time they reach the first birthday or by the time they are 18 months of age.

Symptoms of acid reflux can be severe in a small percentage of babies and the symptoms may include frequent spitting up or projectile vomiting, irritability when the baby is being fed, the baby may refuse food or may only consume a small amount, may suddenly cry or even have a constant cry, will have “wet burps”, frequent hiccups, may even have frequent coughing spells, poor sleep habits with waking up frequently throughout the night, and the baby will also have bad breath and not the sweet baby breath as is usually the case.

The baby may also experience some of the less common symptoms of acid reflux that include difficulty in swallowing, weight loss or may be diagnosed with poor weight gain or failure to thrive, have respiratory problems such as asthma, bronchitis, pneumonia, and wheezing. The baby may also have frequent ear infections or even have sinus infections. We all know babies drool, but a baby with acid reflux may drool constantly, or have a hoarse sounding voice. A very scary symptom can also occur and that is that the baby with acid reflux may have spells of not breathing.

If you notice any of these symptoms the common or not so common ones, your baby should be seen by a pediatrician right away for evaluation, monitoring and perhaps some testing.

Related posts:

What Is Infant Acid Reflux We have all seen the movies with the baby spitting...

Infant Acid Reflux Symptoms As a parent of a new infant, there is not...

Heartburn And Acid Reflux You probably think that only adults that eat spicy foods...

All About Acid Reflux Acid reflux strikes at any age. The severity of the symptoms may be different and so it can be hard to tell if that is what is really going on. For some individuals though the symptoms of acid reflux are all too familiar. That is because they suffer from them on a regular basic. Discovering the symptoms of acid reflux can help you to diagnose what is going on though. That way you can take action for fast and effective relief.

The most common symptom of acid reflux is a burning sensation. It can be felt in the stomach, the chest, or the throat. For some individuals the pain will be from the bottom of the stomach to the top of the throat at the same time. When it occurs at night a person may think they are suffering from a heart attack as they may get severe pains in their chest region.

There are different forms of acid reflux and one of them is known as Dyspepsia. When this is present there will be some additional symptoms noticed by the individual. They include pain that occurs in the abdomen, the stomach feeling very full even hours after you have completed your meal, and sometimes nausea that occurs after you have eaten something.

There are some less common symptoms of acid reflux that people have reported as well. One of them is pain behind the breastbone. It may feel as if you swallowed a piece of food such as meat that was too large. It can become more severe when you lie down as well. Drinking plenty of fluids can help to flush out this feeling but it can take days for you to feel better. If it returns often then you have a serious problem with acid reflux that needs to be addressed with a doctor.

For some individuals the acid in their esophagus can affect their ability to speak. They may find they have to continually clear their throat in order to talk. They may have a dry cough that won’t go away either. The persistence of it can be very annoying and it can prevent them from getting a good night of rest. Some individuals find it is hard to eat because they can’t swallow properly. This likely means the opening of the esophagus has narrowed due to the acid.

When a person has a sore throat for a period of time they may blame it on allergies. However, if you suffer from acid reflux that could be to blame for it. Some individuals have daily occurrences of hiccups too that can be quite painful. They can also be a symptom of acid reflux.

Pay attention to such symptoms because if you don’t the situation can continue to get worse and worse. You definitely want to get relief from acid reflux as soon as you can. Rather than allowing it to keep cropping up, look for solutions that will prevent it. Acid reflux can be too painful to wait for medications to kick in once you are hurting.

If your acid reflux symptoms continue to get worse or you can’t get relief for them on your own seek medical attention. Many cases of it are severe enough that they require either prescription medications or surgery to get rid of them. Don’t continue to allow the pain from acid reflux to be something you just try to cope with.

Related posts:

How Do You Know If You Are Experiencing Acid Reflux Symptoms We all may get a little heartburn from time to...

Symptoms Of Acid Reflux You probably know when you have heartburn or acid reflux...

Did You Know That What You Are Feeling Right Now May Be Acid Reflux Sadly, many of us have experienced the burn of acid...

Do You Understand Acid Reflux Disease We all eat, so it is understandable that occasionally most...

What Is Acid Reflux Acid reflux is commonly referred to as heart burn and...

Factors That Can Increase Your Risk Of Suffering From Acid Reflux

Acid reflux

Contrary to popular belief, acid reflux isn't something that people have to deal with as they get older. In fact, there are more infants and young adults that suffer from it than you probably realize. It is believed that genetic factors play a role in it as well. Some people assume that sense you can’t do anything about your genetic make up that you just have to deal with it.

Yet there are many factors out there that can increase your risk of suffering from acid reflux. The more of these areas that you take part in the more likely you will have concerns. It may be only once in a while that you suffer from acid reflux or it may end up being several times each day. Take an inventory of your own lifestyle and then make changes so that you can reduce your risk.

The biggest factor that can lead to acid reflux is your diet. When you consume foods that are spicy or that contain citrus fruits, fatty meats, and even desserts with chocolate in them you increase your chances of suffering from it. Individuals that are in the habit of eating very fast or over eating having a higher risk. Eating in the hours before you go to bed will also lead to acid reflux taking place while you sleep.

Many women experience boats with acid reflux during their pregnancy. It can be due to many different factors. Eating foods late at night or getting up to eat and then going back to sleep is one of them. Generally though it has to do with the presence of hormone levels that are higher than normal. Acid reflux is more common later in the pregnancy due to the pressure that is placed upon the stomach as the baby is growing.

Obese individuals can experience the same type of pressure on their stomach too. That is why they are more at risk for acid reflux. Do your best to reduce your overall weight by taking action. Eat foods that are healthy for you and also get more exercise. Dropping ten pounds or more will make a significant difference in the amount of pressure against your stomach. It will also lower your risk of other types of health concerns.

Do you smoke or drink on a regular basis? If so you are increasing your risk of acid reflux. This is because both of these practices weaken the lining of the esophagus. Research has shown that individuals that smoke produce more stomach acid than those that don’t. At the same time it reduces the amount of saliva that is produced to counteract that acid.

There are some medical conditions that can increase your risk of acid reflux as well. Ulcers are sores that form along the lining of the stomach. They can result in more acid being present in the stomach. With a hernia the valves on the esophagus can be open when they should be closed. This is what allows acid to come back up from the stomach.

These types of problems can be diagnosed by your doctor. With effective treatment though it can be significantly reduced. Letting such medical problems go undetected will result in the acid reflux getting worse even when you have made changes to other risk factors in your life.

Being able to identify the various factors that can increase your risk of acid reflux is important. You don’t want to suffer from such pain when you don’t have to. You also don’t want to be causing damage to your esophagus as it can be irreparable. Taking care of your body and having good habits will likely take care of problems you have now with acid reflux. If you can prevent it from being an ailment that you have in the future that is great news too.

Related posts:

Are You Or A Loved One At Risk For Acid Reflux Individuals of all ages are susceptible to acid reflux but...

Are You At Risk For Acid Reflux Individuals of all ages are at risk for acid reflux...

Are You Guilty Of Loving Any Of The Causes Of Acid Reflux We all love to eat and eat many different types...

Symptoms That Indicate You May Be Suffering From Acid Reflux Acid reflux can affect a person at any time of...

Faqs About Acid Reflux Everyone has stomach acid. Do you understand when that occasional bout with heartburn or indigestion can be determined to be something a little bit more, like acid reflux disease? Our esophagus is suppose to close off so food and liquids will remain in the stomach once they get there but sometimes the muscle, the “lower esophageal sphincter (LES) relaxes or does not function properly and stomach contents and or acid can escape and splash up back into the esophagus or even worse yet all the way back up into the throat or mouth, even into our airways in the lungs. When this occurs problems can happen and we can become ill or have difficulty swallowing. It can even develop into something serious like esophageal cancer. Do you understand acid reflux disease, and would you like to understand it better?

Acid reflux disease is also called, gastroesophageal reflux disease or GERD for short. There are generally three reasons why a person may experience this back-up of stomach contents or acid and they include the esophagus being overwhelmed by the quantity of stomach content and acid, the stomach’s contents are too acidic, or the food has not cleared the esophagus fast enough. These three things can happen singly or they can be combined.

When fluid from the stomach backs-up and reaches the mouth, we call that acid indigestion and we tend to burp and feel this burning at the back of our throat and possibly taste acid or stomach contents in our mouth. As the stomach contents and acid flow back up the esophagus it can create a burning sensation, which we call heartburn. If you experience either of these two situations more than twice a week you may have acid reflux or even a more serious problem. You should see your doctor to be evaluated and diagnosed.

Individuals that have acid reflux and fail to treat it can end up with serious problems such as erosive esophagitis, which is a condition in which inflamed tissue, swelling and irritation occurs in the esophagus. Typically half of all those who experience acid reflux end up with non-erosive type of acid reflux and it can be called, “nonerosive reflux disease (NERD). These individuals will have the normal symptoms of acid reflux but do not show any physical signs of esophageal injury, they are the lucky ones.

Then, there are the individuals who have symptoms of acid reflux and despite taking medications (either prescription or over-the-counter) they continue to have the symptoms of acid reflux. This type of reflux is called, “refractory gastroesophageal reflux disease (Refractory GERD). These individuals usually need to have a more aggressive treatment plan or they need to be monitored and re-evaluated for other possible causes of their acid reflux symptoms.

Do you understand acid reflux disease any better? If you still have questions, see your doctor.

Related posts:

How Much Do You Know About Acid Reflux If you suffer from heartburn, regurgitated stomach contents and frequent...

There Are Complications From Acid Reflux As if acid reflux wasn't bad enough, now you tell...

The Basic Facts About Acid Reflux Whether you call it acid reflux disease, heartburn or gastroesophageal...

What Causes Acid Reflux We all can experience a little bit of acid reflux...

Discover The Causes Of Acid Reflux If you or a loved one suffers from acid reflux...

Are You Or A Loved One At Risk For Acid Reflux

Acid reflux

Individuals of all ages are susceptible to acid reflux but those who are elderly tend to have serious conditions as a result of the acid reflux. There are many factors that contribute to your risk for acid reflux including your eating pattern, whether you have a condition such as pregnancy that may aggravate acid reflux, the presence of other diseases that can also aggravate the condition of acid reflux and those who are obese are also candidates for acid reflux.

Acid reflux can occur at any age because some of the factors for putting individuals at risk are things that we all do such as our eating patterns, and activities that we do after eating some of which can contribute to the occurrence of acid reflux.

Individuals no matter the age, who eat fast, or who eat foods that are high in fat, rich in sugars, or contain food items that are spicy may discover that the food “speaks back” after being consumed. Individuals who are also at high risk for heartburn are those who take naps after eating large meals such as is a common thing to do after a large meal like at Thanksgiving time. Anyone who is in the habit of snacking just before going to bed is also at a high risk for acid reflux.

Pregnant women experience heartburn especially in the third trimester of the pregnancy because that is when the uterus is growing and putting pressure on the stomach making it difficult to digest foods, resulting in acid reflux. This type of acid reflux resulting from pressure on the stomach is often resistant to medications or dietary interventions and is unfortunately for some, not relieved until the baby is delivered, which then takes the pressure off of the stomach.

Obesity is a risk factor for acid reflux because when an individual has a high BMI, there is an accumulation of abdominal fat that puts the individual at risk for acid reflux as well as complications such as Barrett’s esophagus and esophageal adenocarcinoma. Studies that followed individuals who had acid reflux found that weight loss reduced symptoms of acid reflux.

Respiratory diseases such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) chronic bronchitis and emphysema can also put you at risk for acid reflux.

Individuals who consume alcohol can also be at risk for acid reflux because the alcohol relaxes the muscles responsible for keeping the stomach contents in the stomach and not coming back up into the esophagus. When these muscles referred to as LES muscles are relaxed they can’t do their job. Alcohol also may irritate the mucous membrane of the esophagus and it also increases the level of acid in the stomach all of which can contribute to acid reflux.

So if you are someone you love tend to eat too fast, eat large meals and then take naps, are pregnant, eat a diet high in fat, sugars or spicy foods, are obese, have respiratory diseases or drink alcohol you and they, may be at risk for acid reflux.

Related posts:

Are You At Risk For Acid Reflux Individuals of all ages are at risk for acid reflux...

Factors That Can Increase Your Risk Of Suffering From Acid Reflux Contrary to popular belief, acid reflux isn't something that people...

The Basic Facts About Acid Reflux Whether you call it acid reflux disease, heartburn or gastroesophageal...

Are You Guilty Of Loving Any Of The Causes Of Acid Reflux We all love to eat and eat many different types...

How Much Do You Know About Acid Reflux If you suffer from heartburn, regurgitated stomach contents and frequent...

Foods That Trigger Acid Reflux

Acid reflux

When you suffer from acid reflux, you need to make sure you are doing all you can to get on the mend. Acid reflux and heartburn happens when the muscle in your esophagus does not function properly. It does not close after you eat, make the acid travel back up. For this reason, it makes sense that there are certain foods that will trigger symptoms.

There are foods and herbs that can actually help your acid reflux attacks. You can take ginger, peppermint, anise and even catnip to help aid your digestion. Apple slices and even an ice cold glass of water may also help reduce your symptoms, but besides taking antacids, what else can you do to avoid acid reflux. How about avoid foods that trigger the symptoms? Here are some foods that you might want to avoid.

Citrus fruits: There are plenty of fruits that have a high acid content. Citrus fruits fall into this category. If you suffer from acid reflux, then you may want to eliminate certain citrus fruits. Avoid lemons, fresh lemonade, oranges, limes and fruit juices. Even strawberries and cantaloupe can trigger the attacks.

Spicy foods: You love that big plate of Mexican food, but chances are, if you suffer from acid reflux, it will only worsen your condition. Chinese food is another common culprit of these attacks. Spicy foods and foods that contain a lot of pepper are not things that you want to eat when you have acid reflux. If you simply cannot give up your spicy foods, then try to eat it in a smaller amount or try a milder version.

Fatty and fried foods: Fast foods have advantages. It is quick, easy and yummy, too. However, this can cause you to have an acid reflux attack faster than just about anything else. When you eat this kinds of foods, you are asking for trouble. Instead of grabbing fried chicken or those greasy French fries, try the baked varieties instead.

Chocolate: You love your chocolate, and who doesn’t? But did you know that eating chocolate when you are prone to heartburn and acid reflux can exacerbate this problem even further? It is true. When you already have problems with acid reflux, you will need to curb your chocolate craving more than ever.

Tomatoes: Tomatoes are in a lot of foods, but it can certainly trigger you acid reflux. Fresh tomatoes as well as other tomatoes based foods will cause you a lot of problems later on in the day. Think of the pizza sauce, spaghetti sauce and other tomato-y foods. Avoid these if you want to avoid acid reflux.

Onions and garlic: You have to have onions and garlic to make your foods tasty, but think twice. When you have acid reflux, this is a recipe for disaster. When you add these flavorful foods to your dishes, you will certainly have problems.

These are all common foods that can easily cause problems with acid reflux. Be nice to your digestive system and avoid these foods if at all possible.

Related posts:

Do You Know What Foods To Avoid And Which To Enjoy When You Suffer From Acid Reflux There are trigger foods that aggravate your acid reflux when...

Faqs About Acid Reflux Everyone has stomach acid. Acid reflux happens for a number of different reasons, but the cause is always the same. If you eat too much, or the muscle in your esophagus does not function properly, the stomach acids can rise up into your esophagus. This causes the burning and uncomfortable feeling you can get. Of course, some people only experience acid reflux occasionally, while others have it every day.

There are plenty of ways to treat the symptoms of acid reflux and there are ways of preventing it as well. One of the best ways to treat the symptoms is to take antacids or other over the counter medication that can stop the stomach acids. You can prevent acid reflux in many instances by simply watching what you eat and how much you eat, too.

As mentioned, some people only experience this problem from time to time. However, for those with serious and chronic disorders, you will need to not only seek a stronger medical regimen, but you should also be aware of the complications. You can get several serious medical issues caused by acid reflux.

First on the list of common complications of acid reflux are ulcers. The acid in your stomach can not only damage your stomach, but when you have acid reflux, it can damage the lining of your esophagus too. This can cause ulcers to form. This inflammation is both painful and bothersome and it will prevent you from eating the foods you enjoy. In severe cases, bleeding may occur and blood transfusions may become a part of your medical care. Surgical treatment may also be recommended.

Another complication that is common to those with severe forms of acid reflux includes strictures. Strictures occur when you have ulcers that heal and turn into scar tissue. At this point, the food you eat can get stuck and can lead to problems. While this is not a serious concern, it is bothersome and treating the acid reflux will help with this condition.

Asthma and coughing: Another complication from acid reflux includes coughing and asthma attacks. If you are already prone to asthma attacks, then you know that this can be a serious problem. Coughing can make you feel tired and can even keep you awake at night. You can keep this in check by controlling your acid reflux. When you cough from acid reflux, it is most commonly due to the acid “tickling” or bothering or throat. Many people with acid reflux have this issue much of the time.

Those with acid reflux may find that they are also more prone to middle ear infections, chest pain and even upper respiratory infections. It can lead to varying degrees of inflammation of the throat, which is painful and can be difficult to heal.

As you can see, it is important to treat your acid reflux that you do not get further complications. Many of these issues can be easily prevented.

Related posts:

Complications That Are Possible From Acid Reflux We are probably used to being told that certain diseases...

There Are Complications From Acid Reflux As if acid reflux wasn't bad enough, now you tell...

Discover The Causes Of Acid Reflux If you or a loved one suffers from acid reflux...

How Much Do You Know About Acid Reflux If you suffer from heartburn, regurgitated stomach contents and frequent...

Acid Reflux Can Have Long Term Effects If You Don While millions of people suffer from acid reflux, that doesn't...

Natural Soothers For Acid Reflux

Acid reflux

Eating right is not always an option.
