In today’s busy world breastfeeding while out in public is something that occurs because moms who are close to their babies will take them out with them more than ever before and when nursing especially in the beginning it is highly likely that baby will become hungry while away from home. There are also those occasions while at home, or at the homes of others in which it becomes time to nurse and it is good to know how to nurse in all these situations with confidence and while being comfortable doing so. This article covers just a few tips on how to breastfeed in public and feel confident and comfortable while doing it.
It is common for new breastfeeding moms or those who have not breastfed in public for a while to feel slightly embarrassed or uneasy about doing so without drawing unwanted attention to themselves or to their nursing babies. It is possible for all nursing moms to learn how to breastfeed in public and to do so with confidence and to also feel comfortable breastfeeding almost anywhere. It takes just a little preparation, education and support from those who also breastfeed in public or who have done so previously.
Here are some breastfeeding in public tips to get your started:
The obvious way to breastfeed in public without drawing attention to what you are doing is to put your baby under cover. There are many ways to breastfeed and put your baby under cover such as by using a baby blanket to throw loosely over the nursing baby, by wearing clothing that is specially made for nursing in private. Wearing a nursing bra that unhooks easily is also necessary so that you can offer the breast quickly without drawing too much attention. You can practice all of these techniques in front of a mirror before doing them in public for the first time. You can also practice and get used to breastfeeding in front of others in your home, first in front of family members and then in front of friends who drop by. Your confidence will build the more you nurse in front of others that you are familiar with and soon you will be so confident that the idea of nursing in front of strangers won’t feel quite as intimidating as it may have been at the beginning of your breastfeeding journey.
When out in public and the need arises to nurse your baby, you don’t have to stay in the crowed, you can look for places that are a little more secluded and private to nurse your baby and then return to the group. Places that are ideal for nursing in public are: restrooms, dressing rooms, a restaurant booth, or while parked in your vehicle before going into the event. If you are in a private home, ask to use a room in the home for breastfeeding so that you can have some privacy.
If others do notice that you are breastfeeding in public make sure that your focus is on your baby and his/her needs and not on the comments of passerby’s. You will always run into those who have different opinions from yours no matter what the topic is. There will always be those who view breastfeeding in public as something that is offensive or somehow obscene. Ignore them, as best you can. They can simply walk by without choosing to cause you any trouble, but if they insist on making a scene, remember that what is important is feeding your baby. You can get up and walk away without disturbing your nursing baby. You can think of some polite comebacks to say in advance, or you can just ignore them or like previously mentioned just get up and leave.
Surround yourself with breastfeeding support such as family and friends. There are many professional support groups for breastfeeding moms in whom you can network with for support, for additional tips and for the ability to share your experiences with other breastfeeding moms. Utilize these supports and enjoy the experience of breastfeeding to the fullest. Be proud of your decision to give your baby the best nutritional start in life you can possibly provide. Moms whom prepare in advance and seek out support can breastfeed in public and feel confident and comfortable doing so.
