We all love to eat and eat many different types of food, some of which can be unhealthy for us and some may even cause acid reflux. Food is not the only thing that we love that can lead to acid reflux. Are you guilty of loving any of the causes of acid reflux?

There are many things that can cause acid reflux including a relaxation of the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) which is what allows food and drink into the stomach and is suppose to close after letting it in so that the stomach contents and stomach acid do not make their way back up through the LES and into the esophagus.

Individuals that have acid reflux may experience this occurrence of food content and acid coming back up the esophagus several times a day. The stomach is designed to withstand the acid but the lining of the esophagus, throat and mouth are not. When stomach contents mixed with acid make its way up through the esophagus it can cause damage to the tissue of the esophagus.

A relaxed LED is not the only cause of acid reflux. Hiatal hernia can also contribute to acid reflux because it is located usually when the upper part of the stomach above the diaphragm, separates from the stomach and the chest wall. The diaphragm is what helps to keep the LES from allowing acid back up and a hiatal hernia can weaken the LES and cause acid reflux. It is common for people who are older than 50 to have a small hiatal hernia. A hiatal hernia can occur in individuals of any age.

Other things can cause acid reflux like when individuals smoke, or drink alcohol, are overweight, or become pregnant.

Eating certain foods can contribute to the occurrence of acid reflux such as chocolate, citrus fruits, food and beverage containing caffeine, foods that are fried or high in fat content, foods flavored with peppermint, spicy foods and foods that have tomato in them or are made from tomato sauce.

OK, so we’ve learned that there are several things that we may do that are not particularly healthy for us and can in the end, contribute to us feeling a lot of pain such as the love of sweets, or fatty foods, the love of a smoke, or a alcoholic beverage. Other things like loving to eat a heavy, rich meal or just a meal that is full of good things like at Thanksgiving time and then just laying down for a nap directly after eating. All of those things that we can dearly love to do can cause us to experience pain in the form of acid reflux. So, are you guilty of loving any of the causes of acid reflux?
