Most athletes loathe sports injuries not only because they detest the pain involved, but also because they really hate the fact that the injury takes them out of the game for however long necessary. This can be especially annoying for someone who is told by a doctor to take an extended hiatus from a sport that is usually a cornerstone of his or her social life as well as an important means for exercising. For this reason, many people eventually decide to disregard their doctor’s orders and resume involvement in sports long before receiving clearance from their doctors to get back into the game. This can lead to further injuries, and may take players out of the game permanently.

People may argue that they know their bodies better than any doctor does, so they know when their body has fully recovered. Other people make the claim that even though they still feel pain in the injured body part, they can trudge through it and can avoid further injuring themselves. These lines of thinking are faulty. Doctors are in the position they are in for a good reason: They know the human body and understand the process of recovery from an injury. You may feel as though you have fully recovered from a painful sports injury because you don’t feel any more pain, but if you were to visit the doctor it might be revealed through an x-ray or examination that you still have quite a bit of recovering to do and any stress to the injury can make it much worse. It is one thing to trust your body’s capabilities, but it’s another thing entirely to decide to go against the sage advice of a doctor. You’re setting yourself up for further injuries if you go against your doctor’s advice.

It can be very tough to stay out of the game when it’s something you enjoy thoroughly and rely upon for exercise and stress relief. One of the best ways to keep yourself content while recovering, however, is to always keep in mind that not allowing your body the time it needs to recover can only result in bad things. You may aggravate the injury and make it worse, or you might receive an entirely new injury and wind up having to wait in recovery for more than one injury. Your body is not an unstoppable machine, no matter how much you would like to believe to the contrary. You need to give your body the time it needs to recover, no matter how long that period of time may be.

By giving your body the full amount of time it needs to recover, you are doing your body a huge favor and allowing yourself the chance to come back to the game as strong as you left it, if not stronger. You may be surprised by how rejuvenated you may feel when returning to the game after an extended period of required rest. Don’t force your body back into the game before it’s ready to do so.
